In the paper, we study discourse connectives and other discourse phenomena in Czech based on corpus data. We focus on the delimitation of connectives primarily from the functional point of view and we present their further classification into primary and secondary connectives based especially on their degree of grammaticalization. Special attention is paid to the variability of secondary connectives occurring in several lexical realizations and grammatical variants. We also present the frequency of the individual connectives in written texts and we analyze their syntactic behavior. We then discuss the relation of connectives to reference (a special group consists of the anaphoric and cataphoric connectives), connectives occurring next to each other in the text, and the possibilities of modification of connectives. Our analysis is based especially on the language data of the Prague Discourse Treebank 2.0. The aim of the paper is to present a detailed study of discourse connectives in written Czech and to present connectives as an open class covering both grammaticalized expressions and looser lexical phrases.

The divorce of parents is a situation which in the long term affects life of everyone involved. The aim of this study is to describe the parents’ divorce from the child’s point of view. The perception of the family by children was examined by the FAST method. The children presented a typical, an ideal and a conflict representation of the family. We compared the group of 15 children in a divorce situation with the group of 19 children in stable family environment without significant parental conflicts. The average age of children in both groups was 9,5 years (range 5 – 15 years). We were interested in the family members, cohesion and the description of family conflicts. Children in parents’ divorce described a lower cohesion not only in the parents’ relationship but also between themselves and both parents. This supports the spillover concept in the family and is in harmony with findings, which point out the inferior quality of parenthood after the divorce. Children, whose parents were in the process of divorce during the collecting of data, included into the family also relatives outside the primary family. However, their membership in the family was not permanent. It seems that these children are seeking for support in relationships within the extended family or they substitute the quality (the worsening of quality after the divorce) by quantity in relationships. They also describe family conflicts with worse results, and they don’t describe effective strategies of solving conflicts.

Děti stavěly typickou, ideální a konfliktní reprezentaci rodiny.

This study concerns an integral topic of psycholinguistic research in reading comprehension — understanding selected aspects of cohesion. It is based on an English study by Yuill and Oakhill (1988) which we replicated in the Czech environment. We investigated the comprehension of three types of anaphora (reference, lexical cohesion and ellipsis) in children aged 7 to 8. Our main concern was describing how solving the task of identifying antecedents of anaphora in a story depends on the type of anaphora, on the distance of the antecedent of the anaphora and on the children’s reading level. It was discovered that successful identification of the antecedent positively correlated with the reading level. The most difficult identification of the antecedent was generally found to be in their immediate proximity. Differences between scores for the individual anaphora types were not statistically significant. Due to the absence of relevant data concerning the acquisition of cohesion, this research offers the first experimental insight into this topic.
