The article deals with the presentation of attempts to build regional security system in the Mediterranean area. This water reservoir becomes one of the most signifi cant territories for the security policy of European Union because it constitutes a relevant source of security threats, such as ethnic and religious confl icts, aggressive Islamic fundamentalism, illegal immigration or drugs’ smuggling. Countless threats require a close cooperation between the states of the region that not only should focus on the issue of combating these threats but also on the counteracting factors determining the onset of given threats

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono próby budowy regionalnego systemu bezpieczeństwa w regionie Morza Śródziemnego. Akwen ten staje się jednym z najważniejszych obszarów dla polityki bezpieczeństwa Unii Europejskiej. W jego zlewisku generowana jest cała masa zagrożeń bezpieczeństwa: konfl ikty etniczno-religijne, agresywny fundamentalizm islamski, nielegalna imigracja czy przemyt narkotyków. Zagrożenia te wymagają ścisłej współpracy pomiędzy państwami regionu, skierowanymi nie tylko na kwestię zwalczania tych zagrożeń, ale również w celu przeciwdziałania czynnikom generującym ich powstanie.
