The article analyzes a 17th century chronicle written by Stefan Renatowicz (1617-1694), a monk of the Canons Regular of the Lateran in Kazimierz. Stefan Renatowicz was born and raised in Kazimierz. He joined the order after graduating from the Kraków University and spent most of his life in the Kraków monastery, where he held the posts of prior, library and archives keeper and professor of philosophy. His major works include the biography of saint Stanisław Kazimierczyk (1433-1489), published in 1660, and the chronicle of the monastery, which is known among the historians under its abridged Latin title of Casimiriae civitatis, urbi Cracoviensi confrontatae, origo. The chronicle has been kept in the manuscript section of the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków since 1877. It is a highly cited source of historical information about Kraków, Kazimierz and the Canons Regular of the Lateran in Poland in the 17th century. The chronicle features fascinating descriptions of the Swedish invasion of Poland and the battle of Vienna (1683). It was modelled on Miechovia sive promptuarium antiquitatum monasterii Miechoviensis by Samuel Nakielski, published in 1649. The chronicle was discovered by Jerzy Samuel Bandtkie (1768-1835), and today, it is used as a source text by historians, art historians, literary and classical scholars. The much-needed critical edition of the chronicle has not yet been published.
