Na okres autonomii galicyjskiej przypada gwałtowny rozwój i popularność lecznictwa uzdrowiskowego, w ramach którego sławę zdobyły zarówno miejsca mające lecznicze wody mineralne, jak też dysponujące korzystnym dla zdrowia klimatem bądź innymi walorami (borowina, żętyca, zakłady przyrodolecznicze). To również czas przemian społeczno-obyczajowych, postępu w dziedzinie infrastruktury, rozwoju nauki, rozprzestrzeniania się nowych prądów zmieniających zastaną rzeczywistość. Wyjazdy wakacyjno-lecznicze stały się w nowych realiach szerzej dostępne, a uzdrowiska przeobraziły się w gwarne i ruchliwe centra. Realizowano w nich nie tylko program leczniczy, ale z biegiem lat coraz ważniejszą dla kuracjuszy dziedzinę rekreacji i rozrywki. Czas spędzony na wyjeździe, a trwał on około 6 tygodni, wypełniały rozmaite zajęcia. Część z nich wiązała się z charakterem miejsca, były to: picie wód, kąpiele, gimnastyka, spacery, inne terapie zalecane przez lekarzy zdrojowych. Resztę czasu, a było go sporo – zapełniał program kulturalno-rozrywkowy. Jego zakres był podobny do tego w życiu codziennym kuracjuszy. Bale i wieczorki z tańcami, koncerty, przedstawienia teatralne, wizyty i rewizyty należały do podstawowych przyjemności, ale również obowiązków wczasowiczów. Do dyspozycji uzdrowiskowych gości pozostawały biblioteki i czytelnie, wypożyczalnie nut i fortepianów. Można było, korzystając w własnego bądź pożyczonego transportu, zwiedzać bliższe i dalsze okolice. Z czasem upowszechniła się turystyka krajoznawcza wywodząca się ze spacerów. To ona stała się podstawą turystyki kwalifikowanej i wysokogórskiej, a także taternictwa. Rozwijające się życie kurortowe sprawiło, że do dyspozycji gości oddawano coraz liczniejsze obiekty – cukiernie, kawiarnie, restauracje, sale gimnastyczne, place do gier; wytyczano trasy spacerowe, organizowano tombole, wyścigi, pokazy. Wypoczynek, szczególnie wakacyjny, stawał się prawem coraz szerszych kręgów społecznych. Wypełniano wprawdzie skrupulatnie wymagane zwyczajem i obyczajem powinności, ale atmosfera zabawy i wypoczynku oraz specyfika miejsca budowały nową jakość. Z czasem wykreował się kurortowy obyczaj modelujący wszelką aktywność.

The period of autonomy in Galicia is characterised by a rapid growth in the popularity of health resort treatment. Not only spas with mineral waters but also with a salubrious climate or other advantages (therapeutic peat, whey of ewe’s milk, nature treatment facilities) gained considerable fame. It was also a time of changes in customs of the society, progress in the area of infrastructure, development of science and the spread of new currents changing the existing reality. Health treatment during vacation time became more widely available with health resorts being transformed into bustling centres, which implemented health treatment programs as well as into entertainment and recreation facilities, more and more important for the visitors. Time spent away, about 6 weeks, was occupied by various activities. Some of them were related with the character of the place, i.e. drinking waters, baths, exercises, walks, other therapies recommended by the spa doctors. The remaining time was filled by cultural-entertainment program, similar to the activities of everyday life: balls, evening parties, dances, concerts, theatrical performances, visits and return visits – basic pleasures but also the duties of holiday makers. The visitors could dispose of libraries and reading rooms and rent pianos with musical scores. It was possible to go sightseeing in the neighbourhood and other more distant locations with the use of the visitor’s own means of transport or hired. Sightseeing tours, derived from walks, became increasingly popular. It became the basis for the development of qualified tourism and high mountain tourism, also mountaineering. The thriving life at the resorts led to the creation of more and more tourist facilities: confectionaries, cafes, restaurants, gyms, playgrounds, walking routes, lotteries, races and shows. Recreation, especially during holiday time, became the right of increasingly wider social circles. Even though the duties resulting from customs and traditions were scrupulously fulfilled, the atmosphere of fun and leisure and the specificity of a location created a new quality. With time, health spa customs developed and started modelling any undertaken activity.

The present paper is devoted to the names of seaside boardinghouses. Research materials include the names of seaside boardinghouses from Russian and Polish cities: Anapa, Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot. The names have been discussed in three groups: names transferred from common and proper nouns, neologisms and foreign-language names. The analysis has shown both words and phrases with a predominance of words. The research has also taken into consideration advertising and information functions of discussed names.

Przedmiotem artykułu są nazwy pensjonatów nadmorskich kurortów Rosji i Polski. Materiał badawczy pochodzi ze stron Internetowych ośrodków wypoczynkowych miast Anapa, Gdańsk, Gdynia i Sopot. Nazwy hoteli rozpatrywane są w trzech grupach: nazwy przeniesione, nazwy nieprzeniesione, czyli neologizmy nazewnicze oraz nazwy obce. W artykule zwrócono też uwagę na funkcje imion domów wczasowych: reklamową i informacyjną.

Streszczenie: Wielka Brytania, a w szczególności Anglia posiada rozbudowany system nadmorskich kurortów, których skala i złożoność jest niespotykana nigdzie indziej na świecie. Brytyjskie kurorty odegrały kluczową rolę w rozwoju turystyki jako wielkiego międzynarodowego przemysłu oraz w społecznych i kulturowych przemianach na całym świecie. Popularność wakacji na wybrzeżu wzrastała jako swoisty fenomen, aż do lat 70-tych i 80-tych XX w., kiedy ekonomiczna recesja oraz konkurencja tanich wakacji zagranicznych wywarły silny wpływ na dalsze losy i przyszłość kurortów. Wiele brytyjskich kurortów odczuło spadek liczby odwiedzających, upadek obiektów oraz wzrost bezrobocia. Artykuł podejmuje problematykę historii brytyjskich kurortów, na którą wpływ miały społeczne i kulturowe przeobrażenia, a które aktualnie wymagają przekształceń dla zaadoptowania do nowej sytuacji ekonomicznej, turystycznej oraz kulturowych preferencji.

Abstract: Great Britain and England in particular, have expanded system of costal resorts whose scale and complexity is unmatched anywhere else in the world. They had played a central role in the development of tourism as a great international industry and in social and cultural transformation across the globe for more than two centuries. The popularity of holidays at the coast grew over the years as phenomenon until 1970s and 1980s when a combination of economic recession and competition from cheap foreign holidays put great stress on the resorts future and survival. Many British resorts visitors numbers fall, facilities decay and unemployment increase. The article explores history of British coastal resorts which were facing great social and cultural challenges and need to be restructured to adopt to new situation in economy, tourism and cultural preferences.

The article discusses the type of Polish novel, written at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in which the action takes place in health resorts. Affairs and adultery are among frequent themes in these novels. The subculture of health resorts is a dialectics of 1)the idea of freedom and biological motivation in people’s decisions, and 2) social norms. Health resorts create an illusion of the beauty of the world and pure feelings. Dreams about a better world are based on the beauty of nature, as well as one’s connection with poetry. The analysis of the novels proves that affairs and adultery in health resorts function as a distorting mirror which shows ugliness and immorality of the characters’ lives in their family relationships. Health resort is often imagined as Eden which is able to re-create the history of mankind. The utopia of platonic love in health resort proves the crisis of culture and the institution of marriage.
