This paper focuses on the structure and characteristic features of traditional Arabic names. It offers a thorough analysis of their main elements (ism, kunya, nasab, nisba, laqab, and shuhra), and it provides many examples pointing out their literal meanings. Attention is also paid to the importance of traditional Arabic names for the discipline of Islamic genealogy. There is a special focus on the manners of the harmonization of these names with Western standards as well as a short commentary about how the different ways of transcription of personal names may lead to serious misunderstandings on the practical level.
