The aim of the article is to analyze the problem of demolishing valuable objects of modernist architecture. It raises a question of the scope of protection needed. The author analyzes the requirements of the legal statutes, which leads to the conclusion that there is indeed a great need for new and effective protection measures, as well as the establishment of appropriate evaluation criteria. The author discusses certain examples of demolished buildings, pointing out the features that made them unique and exceptional. Moreover, the article compares those “never recognized nor acknowledged” monuments with the buildings which has taken their space. Due to the fact, that the demolition of the most of the post-war modernism buildings happened because of the lack of appropriate and effective conservation efforts, the author calls for greater involvement of architectural critics in the process of qualification of monuments and their protection.

Recenzja omawia strukturę publikacji – część pierwsza stanowi refleksję nad modernizmem w kinie, a druga przynosi bogaty materiał historyczny związany z późnym modernizmem w kinie polskim lat 70. i 80. Recenzent wskazuje na dużą wagę przywiązywaną przez autora do zagadnień instytucjonalnych oraz na szczególnie oryginalne pomysły związane z uwzględnieniem podziału na centrum i peryferia w globalnej dystrybucji prestiżu i kapitału symbolicznego za pośrednictwem festiwali filmowych. Autor książki przekonująco wykorzystuje też Deleuzjańskie i Derridiańskie (hauntologia) koncepcje, aplikując je twórczo do rzeczywistości kina polskiego. Stelmach w wielu aspektach proponuje nowy język dyskusji o kinie polskim ostatnich dekad ubiegłego stulecia.

The text is a review of Miłosz Stelmach’s book Przeczucie końca. Modernizm, późność i polskie kino [Consciousness of the End: Modernism, Lateness and Polish Cinema] (2020). The review starts with the description of the structure of the book, where part one presents research about modernism in cinema, and part two offers a rich historical analysis of late modernism phase in Polish cinema of 1970s and 1980s. The review underlines the book’s focus not only on textual analysis, but also on institutional frameworks of late modern cinema. One of the most original sections of the book is the investigation of centre and periphery inequality in the global distribution of prestige and symbolic capital via festival networks. Stelmach also skilfully applies Deleuzian and Derridian (hauntology) concepts to the realm of Polish cinema. The book is a brilliant proposal to refresh the conceptual framework of discussion about Polish cinema of late 20th century.
