W artykule rozważono zagadnienie wsparcia świadczonego w ramach internetowej grupy dyskusyjnej skupiającej bliskich dzieci z Zespołem Edwardsa. Analiza niemal dwóch tysięcy wypowiedzi pokazuje, że członkowie tej grupy stanowią dla siebie cenne źródło wsparcia emocjonalnego, wartościującego oraz informacyjnego, co w wielu wypadkach skutkuje nawiązaniem przyjaźni i podjęciem korespondencji poza forum. Przede wszystkim jednak dyskutanci wspierają się duchowo. Przejawia się to na wiele sposobów, między innymi przez dawanie drugiemu rodzicowi nadziei na dobrą przyszłość oraz zaświadczanie własnym przykładem, że możliwe jest wyjście z traumy.

This article addresses the phenomenon of the assistance provided by a discussion group, which gathers relatives of children with Edwards Syndrome. The analysis of nearly 2000 statements obtained from the subjects under examination illustrates that they are an invaluable source of emotional support for each other, which is informative, evaluative and contributes to making friends and developing communication beyond the forum. However, the most important thing is that those who keep in touch support each other emotionally. It can be seen in many ways, such as giving these parents hope for a better future and providing them with positive examples of successful dealing with the trauma.

Aim: The aim of this article is to describe experiences of parents who took care of a child with the Miller-Dieker syndrome. Methods: Describing the parents’ experiences was possible by analyzing content in a qualitative manner. The source of the research material was a blog written by a mother of a child with Miller-Dieker syndrome. The research was approached with an initial knowledge about what type of subjects it would be possible to identify in the text. Therefore, a list of main categories was compiled. After reading the contents of the blog several times more detailed categories were established which, in turn after receiving permission from the author of the blog, were illustrated with fragments of her statements. Results: On the basis of conducted analysis it was determined that the problems of parents of a child with a lethal defect are mostly connected with the functioning of the family. To battle those problems parents took actions, in a mental sense, which could be considered strategies. Furthermore, it has been proven that the presence of an ill child had a stimulating for the family when acquiring resources. It helped with personal development and social relations. This can be treated as an argument for a balanced approach when analysing the situation of parents with a terminally ill child, in which one should not negate the hardships connected with raising such a child but highlight the benefits of such a situation. Conclusions: The conducted analysis dealt with chosen aspects of the issue and was based on a case study. Therefore, it would be beneficial to perform further research with a bigger population.

Cel: Celem artykułu było opisanie przeżyć rodziców opiekujących się dzieckiem z letalnym zespołem Millera-Diekera. Metody: Opisanie przeżyć rodziców było możliwe dzięki zastosowaniu metody analizy treści w jej jakościowej odmianie. Materiał badawczy pochodził z bloga prowadzonego przez matkę dziecka z zespołem Millera-Diekera. Do badania przystąpiono z wstępną wiedzą na temat tego, jakie zagadnienia uda się zidentyfikować w tekście. Założono zatem listę kategorii głównych. Po wielokrotnej lekturze treści bloga wydobyto kategorie szczegółowe, które następnie, za zgodą autorki bloga, zilustrowano fragmentami jej wypowiedzi. Rezultaty: Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy stwierdzono, że problemy rodziców dziecka z chorobą letalną dotyczą większości sfer funkcjonowania rodziny. W odpowiedzi na nie rodzice podejmowali działania w sensie mentalnym, emocjonalnym i behawioralnym, które stanowiły swego rodzaju strategie radzenia sobie z sytuacją kryzysową. Okazało się, że obecność chorego dziecka była czynnikiem korzystnie wpływającym na zdobywanie zasobów, rozwój osobowy i relacje społeczne członków rodziny. Jest to argument za zrównoważonym podejściem w analizach sytuacji rodziców dziecka z chorobą śmiertelną, w których, nie negując trudności związanych z jego wychowaniem, podkreśla się płynące z tego korzyści. Wnioski: Ostatecznie przeprowadzona analiza dotyczyła wybranych aspektów zagadnienia i opierała się na badaniu przypadku. Cenne byłoby zatem podjęcie dalszych badań, obejmujących większą populację.

Both the beginning and the end of human life are connected to many moral dilemmas. The discussion becomes especially emotional when we deal with the situation of parents (or sometimes just a mother) who decide about their baby’s life in its prenatal phase of development. The in vitro procedure itself still gives rise to a number of doubts in some circles. Especially the multiple embryo transfer exposes the mother to a potential stress of deciding about the further course of pregnancy. To be more precise: some patients are persuaded into selective abortion. Polish law allows abortion in three cases. Still, the act of 1997 does not seem to be precise enough. On the one hand there is a threat of it being abused, on the other – there are difficulties when it comes to it being executed. Due to the medical advancement issues that were obvious twenty years ago need to be newly evaluated (e.g. the age of an infant capable of surviving outside the mother’s womb is gradually decreasing). It also seems that it is necessary to look upon terms such as abortion, termination, lethal defects, overzealous therapy, abandoning overzealous therapy, euthanasia (active, passive), euthanasia attitude, hospice care attitude, chronic condition, terminal phase, terminal state, palliative care. It becomes crucial especially now when Poland is faced with projects of opposing legal acts: those delegalizing abortion completely and those allowing for complete freedom of it. Therefore, a sound bioethical discussion is in order, such that will allow for the optimal standpoint. At the same time it would be beneficial to concentrate on thanalogy education because, as distant and unrealistic those ultimate matter may seem now, they concern every human being.
