Learning a foreign language is a complex process, influenced by both external factors and the learner’s individual capabilities and limitations. The learner holds a central position in the structure of the glottodidactic system. His or her cognitive style and learning strategies provide a point of reference in developing a language teaching programme. According to recent psycholinguistic, neurobiological and speech-language pathology studies, crucial influence on the mastering of a language is exerted by the laterality pattern, i.e. lateral dominance, and the related preferences for right or left hemispherical processing of the linguistic material. The article identifies the foremost difficulties involved in the dominance of the right hemisphere with respect to the language functions and suggests methods of counteracting them through adequately selected teaching techniques.
