Istotą życia i postawy moralnej ziemian z Kresów Wschodnich był głęboki patriotyzm, przejawiający się głównie w obronie ojcowizny oraz przekonanie o niezwykłym posłannictwie i wyjątkowej pozycji w społeczeństwie. To właśnie tam żyła i działała Maria Rodziewiczówna, popularna niegdyś pisarka. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie tej zapomnianej już dzisiaj postaci – jej dzieł, jej działalności społecznej i patriotycznej, jej codziennego życia w prawdziwie polskim dworze. Autorka pragnie również omówić wartości, które przyświecały kresowym ziemianom, a którym M. Rodziewiczówna z taką gorliwością służyła.

The essence of life and moral attitude of Polish landowners in the lands bordering the Ukraine was patriotism, which manifested itself chiefly in the defence of their heritage and a belief in their special mission and exceptional place in society. Maria Rodziewiczówna, once a very popular Polish writer, lived in these Borderlands. The aim of this article is to remind us of this now forgotten writer - her novels, her social and patriotic works and her life in a real Polish manor. The author also discusses the values which were important for Polish landowners’, and for which M. Rodziewiczówna sacrificed her life.
