With the end of the Cold War, Western Balkans countries have embraced the perspective of integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures, with the exception of Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina regarding accession in NATO. The return of international system from hegemonic to competitive followed by the ambiguities that accompany the integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures marked the return of competitors like China, Russia and Turkey in the regional affairs. To map out sources of influence and the context in which foreign interferences affect decision-making and interests, transfer ideas and norms in the region, the paper uses the concept of linkages that facilitate the understanding of opportunities and constrains, benefits and costs resulting from established relationship between Western Balkan countries and different international and regional powers. The paper makes a multi-level investigation of linkages developed between Western Balkans and the leverage of the most influential actors during the last decade, without undermining historical and societal context that favor of disfavor them.

The article presents the results of a study which aims to determine the effect of the number of industrial vertical linkages and participation in the supply chain on innovation activity of food industry in western Poland. The main research hypothesis is the assumption that innovation processes in food industry are strongly determined by the intensity and nature of the linkages and membership in the supply chain. The scope of the survey relates to innovation in food industry, concerns innovation at the company level and takes into account the diffusion to the “new to the company”. Innovative activities are divided into three general groups including: expenditure on research and development and investments in fi xed assets not used so far (such as: buildings, premises and land, machinery and equipment, computer software), implementation of new products and processes, and innovative collaboration. The survey covers 422 industrial enterprises. The methodological part of the study uses probit modelling that enables to identify the probability of occurrence of innovation activity.

Using unique survey data on direct supplier-multinational linkages in Chile, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Vietnam, this paper first evaluates how foreign investors differ from domestic producers in terms of their potential to generate positive spillovers for local suppliers. It finds that foreign firms outperform domestic producers on several indicators, but have fewer linkages with the local economy and offer less supplier assistance, resulting in offsetting effects on the spillover potential. The paper also studies the relationship between foreign investor characteristics and linkages with the local economy as well as assistance extended to local suppliers. It finds that foreign investor characteristics matter for both. Additionally, this paper examines the role of suppliers’ absorptive capacities in determining the intensity of their linkages with multinationals. The results indicate that several supplier characteristics matter, but these effects also depend on the length of the supplier relationship. Finally, the paper assesses whether assistance or requirements from the multinational influence spillovers on suppliers. The results confirm the existence of positive effects of assistance (including technical audits, joint product development, and technology licensing) on foreign direct investment spillovers, while we find no evidence for demand effects.
