The paper focuses on the collection of political epigrams from the time of the Four-year Sejm. It is compilation of a few hundred pieces depicting in a different light all the participants of the parliamentary sessions, as well as a number of women in these circles. In critical epigrams, the role of an argument is often played by more or less open allusions to love life of the criticised people. Although the riddles touching upon this subject constitute only a minor part of this collection (approx. 14%), different strategies in employing the theme of love life can be distinguished: from delicate taunts to depicting the love life of the given character as the main argument against the person, related to allegations of indifference to the fate of their homeland or even treason. An interesting disparity can be observed while comparing the riddles about men and women. In the case of women, criticism of their love life occurs more frequently than in the case of men. Despite the use of sexual themes as an argument in the political struggle, Polish poetry of the Four-year Sejm era is much less radically vulgar or obscene compared to, for instance, French political literature of the Revolution.

Artur Becker is a Polish-German author living in Germany. He has lived in Germany since 1985. and has written novels, short stories, poems and essays and also works as a translator. Becker was awarded the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize by the Robert Bosch Foundation in 2009, and the DIALOG Prize of the German-Polish Association in 2012.

Becker wurde 2009 mit dem Adelbert-von-Chamisso-Preis der Robert Bosch Stiftung ausgezeichnet, 2012 erhielt er den DIALOG-Preis der Deutsch-Polnischen Gesellschaft Bundesverband.

W artykule przedstawiono informacje o nieuwzględnianym dotąd w pracach edytorskich wznowieniu „Postępku prawa czartowskiego” (anonim typograficzny przypisywany oficynie Sebastiana Sternackiego, datowany mniej więcej na 1619 rok). Ze względu na fizyczne uszkodzenia unikatowego egzemplarza pierwodruku (Brześć Litewski 1570) istniejące opracowania utworu nie są kompletne, a konsultacja druku z początku XVII wieku, który przynosi pełny przekaz tekstu, umożliwia uzupełnienie luk. Na jego podstawie przygotowano edycję fragmentów dotąd nieznanych: początku rozdziału I, części rozdziału II, wierszowanej „Przedmowy do czytelnika łaskawego” oraz „Dialogu abo Rozmowy o Sprawiedliwości Świeckiej”, utworu umieszczonego jako accedit do wznowienia „Postępku”.

The paper includes pieces of information about a reissue of “Postępek prawa czartowskiego” (“The Trial of the Devil’s Law”), an anonymous early printed book attributed to Sebastian Sternacki’s printing shop, dated approximately 1619, and omitted from scholarly editing until now. Due to physical damage to the unique copy of editio princeps (Brest-Litovsk 1570), the existing state of art is incomplete, and reference to the early 17th c. full-text edition allows to fill the missing gaps. As based on the latter copy, an edition of fragments unknown to this day was prepared, namely the beginning of chapter I, a part of chapter II, prefatory verse “Przedmowa do czytelnika łaskawego” (“Foreword to the Gentle Reader”), and “Dialog abo Rozmowa o Sprawiedliwości Świeckiej” (“Dialogue or Conversation on Secular Justice”), a piece appended to the reissue of “The Trial.”
