The author’s contribution deals with poetry of Adolf Dostal (1941–1963) and focuses mainly upon the relations between literature and music in Dostal’s poetry written in Polish language. At the same time the reception of literary criticism of Dostal’s poetry not only in the region of Těšín, but also in the Czechoslovakia, in the Czech Republic after 1992, and in Poland is mentioned. The translations forming further dimension of Dostal’s poetry perception are presented in this contribution.

Adrianna Halwa presents a review of the book by Artur Żywiołek Tristitia moderna – pasja mitu tristanowskiego w nowoczesnej literaturze, filozofii i muzyce [Tristitia moderna - the passion of the Tristan myth in modern literature, philosophy and music]. Artur Żywiołek in his monograph shows the presence and changes of the Tristan myth in European culture. The author analyzes the turning point of the Modernist era, when there were revolutionary changes in literature, music and philosophy. Żywiołek examines this phenomenon in relation to the Tristan myth, its new interpretations, as well as symbols and cultural codes that it has developed since the Middle Ages.

Żywiołek przygląda się temu zjawisku w odniesieniu do mitu Tristana, jego nowych interpretacji, a także symboli i kodów kulturowych, które rozwijały się od średniowiecza.

Kazimierz Maciąg presents an extensive review of the book by Kinga Fink Muzyka w życiu i twórczości Kornel Ujejskiego [„Music in the life and workof Kornel Ujejski”], Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, Rzeszów 2018). Kornel Ujejski (1823–1897), known as the “last great poet of Romanticism”, is a poet who is somewhat forgotten. The analyzed monograph consists of three parts, in which the author presents: the analysis of the musical background on which the poet created, Ujejski’s poetry inspired by music and the history of poems for which music was created. The greatest value of the dissertation is not only to show only the sources and effects of musical inspirations, but also to see in the work of Kornel Ujejski motifs and themes that were and are important for the creators and readers of subsequent eras.

Autor przedstawia obszerną recenzję książki Kingi Fink Muzyka w życiu i twórczości Kornel Ujejskiego, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, Rzeszów 2018). Kornel Ujejski (1823-1897), zwany „ostatnim wielkim poetą romantyzmu”, jest twórcą nieco zapomnianym. Analizowana monografia składa się ztrzech części, w nich autorka zawarła: analizę tła muzycznego, na którym poeta tworzył, poezję Ujejskiego inspirowaną muzyką oraz historię wierszy, dla których powstawała muzyka. Największą wartością rozprawy jest nie tylko ukazanie źródeł i skutków muzycznych inspiracji, ale także dostrzeżenie w twórczości Kornela Ujejskiego motywów i tematów ważnych dla twórców i czytelników kolejnych epok.

Der Beitrag behandelt drei Romane des Schweizer Schriftstellers Urs Widmer: Der Geliebte der Mutter, Das Buch des Vaters und Ein Leben als Zwerg, die – obgleich sie auch getrennt gelesen werden könnten – eine Familientrilogie bilden, weil alle drei das Leben der Angehörigen derselben Schweizer Familie schildern. Da aber in ihnen diverse Leidenschaften im Vordergrund stehen, die eben einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf das Leben der Titelfiguren haben, können sie zugleich als eine ‘Trilogie der Leidenschaften’ bezeichnet werden. Der Beitrag setzt sich somit zum Ziel, diese Leidenschaften sowie ihre negativen Auswirkungen auf die Protagonisten genauer zu charakterisieren, wobei zugleich auf eine Vielzahl von Werken der Musik und der Literatur verwiesen wird, auf die sich hauptsächlich jene Leidenschaften beziehen und in denen sie sich auch unterschiedlich spiegeln. Darüber hinaus wird einerseits der autobiographische Hintergrund der beiden ersten Romane berücksichtigt, und andererseits die Bedeutung der Fiktion im dritten Roman hervorgehoben, der – wie sich erweist – als ein betontes Gegenbild zu den beiden früheren konzipiert wurde.

The article was dedicated to three novels by Swiss author Urs Widmer: Der Geliebte der Mutter (My Mother’s Lover), Das Buch des Vaters [My Father’s Book] and Ein Leben als Zwerg [Life as a Dwarf], which – although they could also be read separately – form a family trilogy because all three depict the lives of the members of the same Swiss Family. However, their diverse passions are in the foreground and have a decisive influence over the life of the title characters. The books can also be referred as a ‘trilogy of passions’. The article characterize precisely these passions as well as their negative or positive impact on the protagonists. At the same time, it refers to a variety of works of music and literature which relates and reflects each of those main passions in different ways. On the one hand, we consider the autobiographical background of the first two novels. On the other hand, the importance of fiction is highlighted in the third novel and was conceived as a fitting counterpart to the two earlier novels.

Artykuł jest poświęcony trylogii szwajcarskiego pisarza Ursa Widmera: Der Geliebte der Mutter (Ukochany matki), Das Buch des Vaters [Księga ojca] i Ein Leben als Zwerg [Życie krasnala]. Każda powieść opisuje z innej perspektywy życie członków tej samej szwajcarskiej rodziny. Ponieważ na pierwszym planie pojawiają się rozmaite namiętności, które mają decydujący wpływ na losy tytułowych postaci, całość można określić mianem ‘trylogii namiętności’. Celem artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie tychże pasji i ich ambiwalentnego wpływu na protagonistów przy równoczesnym wskazaniu licznych dzieł muzycznych i literackich, których namiętności te dotyczą i w których odzwierciedlają się one na różne sposoby. Ponadto uwzględnione zostało autobiograficzne tło obu wcześniejszych powieści oraz znaczenie fikcji w trzecim utworze, który – jak się okazuje – stanowi swoistą antytezę obu wcześniejszych dzieł.

This paper provides an overview of recent scholarship on the value of using literature and song lyrics to help students of English as a Foreign Language improve their pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and accuracy, linguistic competence and confidence, motivation, cultural knowledge, empathy and objectivity, and literary awareness. Literature and multimodal materials can help to promote better understanding of the cultural background of the target language, resulting in improved comprehension of context, dialect, and idioms through the use of language as it is spoken by native speakers. Students are more likely to learn if they are given materials that they enjoy, and if they can see immediate benefits from studying, so teachers are encouraged to promote cross-curricular applications of the skills taught in language classes. The paper then provides a case study to illustrate these principles with an analysis of the popular song “Let It Go” from the recent Disney film Frozen.

U radu se donosi pregled novije znanstvene i stručne literature o uporabi književnosti u riječima pjesama kako bi se pomoglo učenicima engleskoga kao stranoga jezika da unaprijede svoj izgovor, rječnik, gramatičku točnost, jezičnu kompetenciju i samopouzdanje, motivaciju, poznavanje kulture, empatiju i objektivnost, kao i književnu svjesnost. Književni i višemodalni materijali mogu pomoći promicanju boljega razumijevanja kulturne podloge ciljnoga jezika, što također vodi boljemu razumijevanju konteksta, dijalekata i idioma u jezičnoj uporabi izvornih govornika. Uspješnost učenja jezika potencijalno je veća ako se učenicima ponude materijali u kojima nalaze zadovoljstvo i ako pritom iskuse neposrednu korist od učenja. Stoga se učiteljima preporuča poticanje primjene vještina usvojenih na nastavi jezika u drugim predmetima. Rad uključuje i analizu pojedinačnoga slučaja popularne pjesme „Let It Go“ iz nedavnoga Disneyeva filma Frozen, kojom se ilustriraju navedena načela.

Der Beitrag bietet einen Überblick über die Ergebnisse der wissenschaftlichen Forschung zur Verwendung von literarischen Texten bzw. Songs als Hilfe beim Erwerb der korrekten Aussprache, des Vokabulars, der Grammatik, der Sprachkompetenz und des Selbstvertrauens, der Motivation, der kulturellen Kompetenzen, der Empathie und der Objektivität sowie der Förderung von literarischen Kompetenzen im Rahmen des englischen FSU. Literarische und multimodale Unterrichtsmaterialien können zum besseren Verständnis des kulturellen Hintergrunds der Zielsprache beitragen, wodurch auch ein besseres Verständnis des Kontextes, der Mundart und der seitens der Muttersprachler verwendeten Idiome gefördert wird. Dabei ist der Erfolg beim Erlernen einer Fremdsprache potenziell größer, bietet man den Schülern Unterrichtsmaterialien an, an denen sie Gefallen finden und anhand deren der Lernnutzen unmittelbar erfahrbar ist. Deshalb wird den Lehrenden empfohlen, die in anderen Fremdsprachen erworbenen Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten der Lernenden aufzugreifen. Im Beitrag wird als Beispiel für die Anwendung der angeführten Grundsätze die Analyse der neuerdings durch den Disney-Film Frozen populär gewordene Song „Let It Go“ vorgelegt.
