Purpose: The general purpose of this paper is to present living labs as a new form of innovation activity based on the concept of user-driven innovation. More specifi c goals are to show the development of living labs around the world and to identify the possibilities for the development of this new form of innovation in Poland. Methodology: Because of the lack of offi cial statistics regarding the effects of living labs, this paper presents the quality aspects of the problem. Findings: In Poland, living labs are in their fi rst stage of life. The possibilities of using new forms of innovation activities are determined by partnerships between fi rms, research institutions, authorities and local communities. The main obstacle for the development of living labs is the lack of an institutional and legal framework with respect to the concept of user-driven innovation. Research limitations: Because of their short period of life, it is not possible to estimate the effects resulting from the activity of living labs. Therefore, this paper presents only the theoretical aspects of this new concept and reviews the opportunities of using it in practice. Originality: The paper describes a new phenomenon in the area of innovation activities. The added value of the paper lies in the identifi cation of various factors infl uencing the development of living labs.

The concept of liminal museum looks at the potential of public art in the liminal space of exhibition venues, in between urban realm and the interior of public buildings, as an innovative locus of social engagement. More specifically, we study the status of artistic interventions that take place on the façade through the definition of three fields of investigation: juxtaposition, ephemerality, media. We present the case study of a curatorial project developed in Altamura, Italy, within the dimension of living labs used for citizens’ engagement in art production and education. This leads to the issue of co-habitation of museum institutions with surrounding neighbourhoods, interpreting the façade as a symbolic interface that mediates values and languages of art.

The article argues that to reach circular economy goals urban regions need to identify and understand the challenges and opportunities originating from the differences in spatial settings, and to develop place-based solutions by adequately involving (local) stakeholders. Based on the case study that was conducted in Hamburg within the Horizon2020 project REPAiR, spatial specificities in five different urban areas shall be analysed and strategies that were developed in a co-creative process shall be explored. The results show that the spatial organisation of CE strategies depends on urban structures and stakeholders’ interest and needs to be embedded in the (local) governance setting and a spatial planning system.

Among the number of the approaches and types of proinnovation structures the living lab concept gathering momentum in last years is one of the most promising in the processes of developing goods and services fullfiling consumer demands. The active involvement of end-users in research and innovation life-cycle is a prerequisite for raising competitiveness and improving business environment. It is a way of entrepreneurship encouragement and meeting challenges of assuring safety, quality and sustainability in all the spheres of economical life. The paper explores the living labs concept and makes SWOT analysis for the use of the living labs approach in developing sustainable agriculture and tourism sector in rural areas in Bulgaria. It scrutinizes the important questions of establishment and management of such structures. The study considers the use of the approach in a broader aspect through its role in driving innovations for sustainable rural development. The last one, as well as rural regions revival, has been intensively discussed in the examined country but the ways of achieving it are difficult to be found. Thus, the investigation concerns the opportunities for the use of the living labs approach and its feasibility in integrated agriculture and tourism activities.
