The article gives a survey of the relevant Czech linguistic literature and delimits the theoretical basis of the research. The empirical data of sentence ellipses is minutely classified on the basis of their lexical meaning into three basic types (gaining, possession and submitting of information). In these types conditions for the sentence ellipsis in the complex sentence with chain dependence of subordinate clauses are investigated. It has been newly discovered that the decisive condition of this ellipsis is the lexical semantics of the main clause. In sentence ellipsis of the clause of purpose, the subordinate clause of the second degree of dependence becomes a part of the valence potential of the main clause. In contrast, in the ellipsis of the temporal and causal dependent clause, the main clause must express mental or physical state or psychical process.
