The paper focuses on the career of the knight Christopher of Týn (Christoph von Thein), who, after leaving his native estate in Loket region, worked his way up from a common mercenary to a castle administrator in Styria and Carniola, and then to a diplomat, interpreter and condottier in the service of the rulers. The example of Knight Christopher shows the possibilities of social mobility of the lower nobility through service at court. The life of Knight Christopher is certainly not unique. However, we know the details of his life thanks to his own biography, which he wrote for his descendants. This source is set in the context of similar works from the same period.
