The art historical essay explores the beginnings and subsequent development of ”Constructivist or Geometric” art in Mexico, starting in the 1950s and leading into the 1980s. It provides an overview that, albeit its late arrival compared to South American constructivism and geometric art movements, ”Geometrismo Mexicano” finally replaced the decades-long Social Realist mural movement sanctioned by Mexico’s post-revolutionary cultural policy. It further questions the idea of bundling all the artists together under one label which would deny the scope of originality and the diversity of art making approaches that came into being during the 1970s. In sum, the essay explores several of the more contextually relevant and exciting moments and the protagonists who established Mexican ”Geometrismo”.
