W artykule przestawiono poglądy jednego z najwybitniejszych psychologów XX w. Lwa S. Wygotskiego na temat zjawiska i stanu niepełnosprawności intelektualnej. Zasadniczo, zostały one naświetlone w kontekście dyskusji ich autora z koncepcją zaproponowaną przez innego znakomitego psychologa danego okresu Kurta Lewina. Istotą wizji niepełnosprawności intelektualnej reprezentowanej przez Wygotskiego jest jej dialektyczny oraz historyczno-kulturowy charakter. Niepełnosprawność intelektualna jest więc stanem zmiennym, rozwojowym, zależnym od uwarunkowań biologicznych, psychologicznych i społecznych. Stanowi odzwierciedlenie modyfikacji tego stanu oraz modyfikacji historyczno-cywilizacyjnego dorobku ludzkości tak ze strony samej osoby niepełnosprawnej intelektualnie, jak i otoczenia społecznego. W czasie relacji interpersonalnych, intrapersonalnych i przy uwzględnieniu podanych wyżej uwarunkowań można określić istotę analizowanej niepełnosprawności oraz istotę tej niepełnosprawności u konkretnej osoby niepełnosprawnej.

The article presents the approach of Lev S. Vygotsky, one of the most outstanding psychologists of the twentieth century, to the phenomenon and the state of intellectual disability. Basically, it is presented in the context of Vygotsky debating the concept proposed by another outstanding psychologist – Kurt Lewin. The essence of Vygotsky’s vision of intellectual disability is its dialectical, historical, and cultural character. Intellectual disability is thus a variable, evolving state dependent on biological, psychological, and social determinants. It also reflects the modification of this state and the modification of the historical and civilization achievements of mankind both on the part of people with intellectual disabilities and their social environment. During interpersonal and intrapersonal interactions, and taking into account the above, it is possible to determine the nature of the disability and the nature of the disability in a particular person with disability.
