The problem of metaphysical qualities plays an important role in Roman Ingarden’s concept of a literary work. In his ontology, such a work of art is understood as an integral whole consisting of various layers and qualities. According to Ingarden, metaphysical qualities are revealed in the layer of featured objects. It is this polyphony of individual layers, these revealed objects and other valuable qualities are what qualify a literary work as a work of art. Determined by the scheme of a literary work of art, they obtain their fullness in specification, which is an aesthetic subject accessible in an aesthetic experience. At the same time, metaphysical qualities can be discerned as a source of initial emotion, which initiates an aesthetic experience. Metaphysical qualities, as well as the whole work, are accessible not only for the aesthetic experience, but also for the methodical research of the schematic work itself, and its specification. At its roots always lies the making of an athematic acquaintance with a literary work.

Zagadnienie jakości metafizycznych odgrywa niebagatelną rolę w Ingardenowskiej koncepcji dzieła literackiego, które jako organiczna całość zestraja różne warstwy i jakości. Według Ingardena w dziele sztuki literackiej objawia je warstwa przedmiotów przedstawionych. Objawione wraz z polifonią jakości wartościowych poszczególnych warstw konstytuują dzieło literackie jako dzieło sztuki. Wyznaczone przez schemat dzieła literackiego swoją pełnię uzyskują w konkretyzacji, która jest przedmiotem estetycznym, dostępnym przeżyciu estetycznemu. Jednocześnie w jakościach metafizycznych można dopatrywać się powodu emocji wstępnej, inicjującej przeżycie estetyczne. Jakości metafizyczne, tak jak całe dzieło, są dostępne zarówno przeżyciu estetycznemu, jak i metodycznemu badaniu samego schematycznego dzieła oraz jego konkretyzacji. U podstaw zawsze leży atematyczne zapoznanie się z dziełem literackim.

The aim of the paper is to formulate a more or less coherent proposition of a literary theory philosophically based on Thomism. The first part of the essay contains a short characteristic of the general relations between literary theory and philosophy along with a justification of the sensibility of the goal chosen. The second part is a short presentation of the manner the question of literature and its interpretation has been hitherto treated among the Thomists. For the purpose of brevity, it is done in an “exemplary” fashion, by reference to the thought of the two outstanding French Thomists: Etienne Gilson and Jacques Maritain. The third part is devoted to what is most essential for the work, namely: to an at-tempt at presenting a relatively coherent Thomist literary theory, in which attempt the concept of poetic intuition, coined by Maritain, plays a significant role. The text finds its conclusion in several remarks about the general benefits that could be drawn from applying the philosophical thought inspired by the heritage of Thomas Aquinas in literary studies.
