Niniejszy artykuł powstał, jako odpowiedź na pytanie, w jaki sposób papież Franciszek określa tożsamość misjonarza w swoim nauczaniu. Choć każde powołanie w Kościele ma charakter misyjny, Franciszek zaznacza, że osoba posłana przez Kościół do krajów misyjnych musi nieustannie przekraczać siebie, aby dotrzeć z dobrą nowiną do tych, którzy jeszcze nie znają Chrystusa. Jak zaznacza papież, misjonarz nigdy nie działa sam, więc powinien wystrzegać się wszelkich form indywidualizmu. Zadaniem każdego misjonarza jest głoszenie Ewangelii najpierw poprzez przykład własnego życia, a następnie poprzez konkretne działania na rzecz ubogich, i wreszcie przez słowo. Misjonarz – jako człowiek pokoju – winien troszczyć się o inkulturację, by Ewangelia była wyrażana w sposób bliski danej kulturze, a każdy mógł przyjąć słowa Chrystusa jako swoje własne. Znakiem miłości misjonarzy do ziem, na których się znajdują, będzie próba zrozumienia lokalnej kultury poprzez naukę lokalnych języków i zwyczajów. Ojciec święty Franciszek wielokrotnie w swoich dokumentach i wypowiedziach docenia wkład i zaangażowanie misjonarzy na rzecz szerzenia Ewangelii słowem i czynem.

This article was created as an answer to the question of how Pope Francis defines the identity of a missionary in his teaching. The missionary vocation is a special type of vocation in the Church, thanks to which people who hear it in their hearts go to countries where the Catholic faith is not yet strong enough to create hierarchical structures of a given community. Although every vocation in the Church has a missionary character, Francis emphasizes that a person sent by the Church to missionary countries must constantly transcend himself in order to reach with the good news of salvation those who do not know Christ yet. As the Pope points out, a missionary never works alone, so he should avoid all forms of individualism. The task of every missionary is to preach the Gospel first through the example of his own life, and then through concrete actions for the poor and the words he preaches. A missionary – as a man of peace – should take care of enculturation, so that the Gospel is expressed in a way close to a given culture, and everyone can accept Christ’s words as their own. A sign of the missionaries’ love for the lands they are in will be an attempt to understand the local culture by learning local languages and customs. The more familiar something becomes, the more we like it. In his documents and statements Holy Father Francis repeatedly appreciates the contribution and commitment of missionaries to spreading the Gospel in word and deed.
