In recent years the retail payment market has changed remarkably. Nowadays the bank’s sustainable development and the increase of its competitiveness are indissolubly connected with payment innovations. Using them in the process of gaining competitive advantage is impossible without customers’ acceptance. The consumers’ satisfaction, including the fulfillment of their current and future needs, has become the key factor of bank’s market success. A new business model also requires the identification of bank’s strategic resources and its innovative potential. The paper presents payments’ innovations, their role in the process of gaining bank’s competitive advantage and some bank’s market strategies strengthening their position on the payment market.

Over the last two decades the retail payment market has changed remarkably and now it is growing very fast. The move towards mobile payments is a  global tendency. New technologies give an opportunity to increase mobile payments’ efficiency, safety and decrease their costs.Consumers have eagerly adopted mobile devices which serve them as a  tools of communication, sources of entertainment, navigation tools and payment methods.The large market potential of mobile payments has been noticed by banks, merchants, service providers and GSM operators. Significant barrier of mobile payments’ development is lack of their standardization. Despite of that the number and volume of mobile payments’ transactions are increasing very fast. This proves its large potential of development.

The aim of this study was to determine the possibilities of lunching in Poland two main payment solutions based on mobile technologies: mobile payments and mobile payment terminals mPOS. A definition of the mPOS concept was proposed and the main characteristics of both solutions based on mobile technologies for retail payments at POS were identified. The analysis is based on the results of the author’s own survey, including a nationwide representative sample of 1,140 merchants operating in 19 industries. The obtained results allowed for establishing the level of interest in these innovations among retailers, taking into account a number of determinants, such as: the industry sector, company size and the fact of accepting payment cards. The market context and the impact of the network externalities were considered. The main barriers to implementation of mobile payments and mPOS by merchants were identified, and synergies occurring between these solutions were characterized. The recommendations regarding strategies for the implementation of mobile technologies on the Polish retail payments market were formulated in the paper.

Celem opracowania było określenie możliwości wprowadzenia na polski rynek płatności mobilnych i mobilnych terminali płatniczych typu mPOS. W artykule zaproponowano definicję pojęcia mPOS oraz scharakteryzowano główne cechy rozwiązań opartych na technologiach mobilnych, stosowanych do obsługi płatności detalicznych w punktach sprzedaży. Przeprowadzona analiza opiera się na wynikach własnych badań ankietowych, obejmujących ogólnopolską reprezentatywną próbę 1140 przedsiębiorstw handlowo-usługowych działających w 19 branżach. Uzyskane wyniki pozwoliły na określenie stopnia zainteresowania detalistów tymi rozwiązaniami. Wzięto pod uwagę szereg uwarunkowań, takich jak: branża działalności, wielkość firmy oraz fakt akceptowania dotychczas kart płatniczych. W rozważaniach uwzględniono kontekst rynkowy oraz oddziaływanie tzw. efektu sieciowego. Zidentyfikowano główne bariery dla wdrażania przez handlowców płatności mobilnych i mPOS oraz scharakteryzowano występujący pomiędzy tymi rozwiązaniami efekt synergii. Sformułowano także zalecenia dotyczące strategii wdrażania technologii mobilnych na polskim rynku płatności detalicznych.
