Der Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, Rolle(n) und Funktion(en) des Übersetzers im Translationsprozess aus medienphilosophischer Perspektive zu fokussieren. Unter Rückgriff auf das Boten-Modell, das von Sybille Krämer für die Analyse des Begriffes „Medium“ vorgeschlagen worden ist, wurde der Versuch unternommen, „mediale“ Tätigkeit des Übersetzers als Mittlers zwischen Sprachen, Kulturen und Texten zu explizieren. Diese Aktivität scheint so selbstverständlich zu sein, dass sie in vielen Translationsmodellen überhaupt keine Berücksichtigung findet. Der Übersetzer als Medium wurde in Anlehnung an die für diesen Begriff konstitutiven Kategorien der Distanz, Heteronomie, Drittheit, Materialität und Indifferenz charakterisiert.

The aim of this paper is to explore the role and function of the translator in the process of translation from the perspective of media philosophy. According to the “messenger-model”, proposed by Sybille Krämer as a useful tool to analyse the term “medium” as well as the essence of mediality, the paper presents an attempt to describe the activity of the translator as an intermediary between languages, cultures and texts – the activity which is taken for granted und consequently often neglected in various models of the translation process. Based on categories of distance, heteronomy, thirdness, materiality as well as indifference, which are constitutive of the term “medium”, the present paper will characterize the translator as a medium.

Celem artykułu jest spojrzenie na rolę i funkcję tłumacza w procesie translacji z perspektywy filozofii mediów. W oparciu o model „posłańca”, który do opisu pojęcia „medium” i istoty medialności zaproponowała Sybille Krämer, została podjęta próba opisu „medialnej” działalności tłumacza jako pośrednika między językami, kulturami i tekstami – działalności tak oczywistej, że często pomijanej w niektórych modelach procesu translacji. Tłumacz jako medium scharakteryzowany został w oparciu o konstytutywne dla tego pojęcia kategorie dystansu, heteronomii, trzeciości, materialności i indyferencji.
