Religion and Morality in the Minds of Poles: Dependence or Autonomy?

In the article the author takes up a few selected issues related to the general relationship between religion and morality and analyzes the correlation between religion and the attitudes of Poles towards the norms of the Catholic morality, marriage and family. All these considerations are concluded with a brief diagnosis of Polish attitudes towards in vitro fertilization. This issue is particularly marked by a discrepancy between the moral doctrine of the Catholic Church and the actual attitudes of Poles, including the Catholics. In sociological analyses we refer both to the selected national surveys on religion and morality (mainly CBOS surveys), as well as sociological research. In the light of the conducted sociological analysis one cannot clearly answer the question posed in the title of the article: “dependence or autonomy?” Without a doubt the bond between religion and morality is weakening and the processes leading to morality’s autonomy are reinforcing. However, a precise indication of the scope of this evolution: from dependence to independence, is not easy to establish in the scope of the whole society. The secularization of morality continues.

Autor podejmuje kilka wybranych zagadnień związanych z relacją religijności i moralności w wymiarach ogólnych oraz relacje religijności i postaw Polaków wobec norm katolickiej moralności małżeńskiej i rodzinnej. Całość rozważań zamyka krótka diagnoza postaw Polaków wobec zapłodnienia pozaustrojowego in vitro, w której to kwestii szczególnie dobitnie zaznacza się rozziew pomiędzy doktryną moralną Kościoła katolickiego a rzeczywistymi postawami Polaków, w tym i katolików. W analizach socjologicznych odwołujemy się zarówno do wybranych sondaży ogólnopolskich dotyczących religijności i moralności (głównie do sondaży CBOS), ale i do badań socjologicznych. W świetle przeprowadzonych analiz socjologicznych nie można jednoznacznie odpowiedzieć na postawione w tytule artykułu pytanie „zależność czy autonomia”. Bez wątpienia więź religii i moralności słabnie, wzmacniają się procesy autonomizacji moralności, ale precyzyjne określenie zakresu tej ewolucji: od zależności do autonomii, nie jest łatwo zdiagnozować w skali całego społeczeństwa. Proces sekularyzacji moralności trwa.

This work presents the results of sociological research carried out by the staff of the Polish Research Laboratory for the Assessment of Attitudes and Values. Its title is “University Students on Family and Religion 2020.” Within the multi-stranded research applications, one thematic segment pertained to the relationships within the families of those surveyed, and another to the attitudes towards new methods of study forced on them by the pandemic and the subsequent didactic consequences. The work presents the present circumstances of the Polish family in face of the pandemic. It also presents the ongoing processes of modernisation both socially and culturally. Bearing in mind that in times of dynamic social change pro family values are under threat, and traditional values and standards which protect the family are questioned, some further studies in this field have been referred to. Results show that the pandemic can not only create the need for a slower pace of life, more focus on our nearest with whom we can spend time actively and creatively, but it can also force new patterns of university life. Such forced seclusion suits some while others miss university life. For some, remote learning turns out to be more effective than traditional methods. The completed research, and its results, represent the current diagnosis of the level of awareness of university students on the subject of family and university life. In the future it will answer the question whether conditions during the pandemic left a lasting, or a temporary, impression, affected by specific social and cultural trauma.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badania socjologicznego zrealizowanego przez Zespół Pracowni Badawczej Polski Pomiar Postaw i Wartości noszącego tytuł: „Młodzież akademicka o rodzinie i religii 2020”. W wielowątkowym narzędziu badawczym jeden z segmentów tematycznych dotyczył relacji zachodzących w rodzinach badanych osób, inny zaś stosunku do nowych form studiowania, wymuszonych przez pandemię, i płynących stąd dydaktycznych konsekwencji. Opracowanie przedstawia współczesną kondycję polskiej rodziny wobec sytuacji pandemicznej, a jednocześnie trwających procesów modernizacji społecznej oraz kulturowej. Mając na względzie to, iż w warunkach dynamicznej zmiany społecznej zagrożone są wartości prorodzinne, a przy tym kwestionowane są tradycyjne wartości i normy chroniące rodzinę, przywołane zostały dodatkowo wyniki kilku badań z tego zakresu. Okazuje się, że czas pandemii nie tylko może wywoływać potrzebę zwolnienia tempa życia i skupienie się na najbliższych, wśród których można aktywnie i kreatywnie spędzać czas, lecz także wymuszać nowe formy życia akademickiego. Niektórym odpowiada takie wymuszone odcięcie się od świata, inni zaś tęsknią za życiem akademickim, a przy tym dla niektórych studiowanie zdalne okazuje się bardziej wydajne niż to tradycyjne. Zrealizowane badanie i przedstawienie jego wyników jest aktualną diagnozą kondycji świadomości młodzieży studiującej na temat rodziny i życia akademickiego. W przyszłości pozwoli odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jakim stopniu warunki pandemii miały charakter trwały, w jakim zaś tylko przejściowy, uwarunkowany swoistą traumą społeczną i kulturową.

This article explains the impact of the explosion of Polish entrepreneurship (the so-called founding privatization) on the modernization of social structure and free market institutions in Poland. It has been shown that the process of revival of entrepreneurship after 1988 took place with the use of experiences included in the concept of heritage of the past. Changes in the ownership structure of economic organizations observed after 1988 are discussed in statistical terms. This change was of great importance for the modernization of the company size structure in Poland. The fast-paced process of rebuilding the social group of entrepreneurs played a major role in building family businesses. They are the stabilizer of the economy. For the efficiency of the modernization process in Poland after 1988, it was important to achieve institutional balance. The practice of everyday life showed that it was a difficult task to achieve a satisfactory state. As a result, the slowing down of the process of qualitative change in Poland after 1988 was largely influenced by informal institutions, including tradition and customs established in the past.

Głównym celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie, w jakim zakresie prywatyzacja założycielska, zwana eksplozją polskiej przedsiębiorczości, doprowadziła do przyspieszenia procesów modernizacji instytucji wolnorynkowych. Odbudowana została, po latach niebytu w Polsce Ludowej, grupa społeczna przedsiębiorców. Pojawiły się szanse na powstanie firm rodzinnych, które są fundamentem silnej gospodarki. Przywrócone relacje wolnorynkowe wpłynęły na modernizację konsumpcji, kreowanie przez przedsiębiorców marki producenta oraz marki oferowanych produktów. W artykule zwrócono uwagę, że silne były, jako następstwo braku równowagi instytucjonalnej, tendencje amodernizacyjne. W efekcie duży wpływ na spowolnienie procesu zmian jakościowych w Polsce po 1988 r. wywierały instytucje nie-formalne, w tym tradycja i zwyczaje ugruntowane w przeszłości. Temat zrealizowano z wykorzystaniem wywiadów jakościowych prowadzonych w latach 2018–2020 wśród przedsiębiorców, którzy nieprzerwanie prowadzą działalność gospodarczą od dwudziestu lat. Skupiono się na grupie mikroprzedsiębiorców oraz małych i średnich przedsiębiorcach.
