The author describes how the thought of Card. Lustiger arose from the midst of the dramatic history of France as well as Europe. A question is posed about the similarities and differences between the French and the Polish religious thought. The article contains following sections: reconsideration of the attitude towards the Enlightenment, universality of human rights, various forms of liberalism, the issue of separation between faith and politics, morality and law in the new Europe. The thought of Cardinal Lustiger helps us better understand the current situation of the Polish Church after the political transformation and provides a valuable point of reference for a reflection on the religious awareness in Poland.
