Occasional neologisms in literary works, especially those not belonging to the so-called high literature, are in comparison to the lexicalized vocabulary seldom objects of linguistic research. The reason for this con be the fact that such lexical items are not a part of the language viewed as a system but are created for the purpose of a given text, for a certain ‘occasion’. This does not mean, however, that such items are not worth research and description. The paper presents a linguistic analysis of the occasional neologisms contained in the novel “A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess and in its translations “Uhrwerk Orange” and “Nakręcana pomarańcza”. On the basis of an analysis of the quantity of particular speech parts, inflection patterns or motivation conclusions are drawn with respect to the creativity of the novel’s author and of the translators as well as with respect to the influence of the applied translation strategies on the reception of the novel.
