In the article, the author presents the basic relations between a nation state and a multicultural society. According to the author, the attitude of the nation state and the dominant nation in the state to the phenomenon of cultural diversity of society is a key phenomenon in the theory and practice of multiculturalism. Namely, the nation state is characterized by two strategies defining the attitude to the cultural diversity of society. It is a strategy of cultural homogenization and a pluralistic. The emergence of a pluralistic strategy begins with the occurrence and eventual growth of phenomena and processes referred to as multiculturalism and multicultural society.

Struktura etniczna państwa jest jednym z czynników mogących kształtować jego ustrój i skutkować przyjmowaniem różnych specyficznych mechanizmów prawnych. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie na przykładzie Republiki Cypryjskiej nietypowego rozwiązania prawnoustrojowego polegającego na proporcjonalnym podziale władzy, tj. stanowisk i urzędów w państwie, pomiędzy dominujące grupy etniczne. Analizie poddane zostaną wybrane postanowienia Konstytucji Republiki Cypryjskiej, które odwołują się do greckiej i tureckiej społeczności zamieszkujących Cypr i regulują poziom oraz sposób ich uczestnictwa w sprawowaniu władzy w państwie. Podkreślona zostanie wyjątkowość przyjętych na Cyprze rozwiązań prawnoustrojowych, które mając zapewnić jedność państwa i stanowić istotne gwarancje dla poszczególnych grup etnicznych, mogą jednak w praktyce okazać się niefunkcjonalne bądź prowadzić do wypaczeń.

The ethnic structure of the state is one of the factors that can shape its system and result in the adoption of various specific legal mechanisms. The aim of this article is to present, on the example of the Republic of Cyprus, an unusual legal system solution consisting in the proportional division of power, i.e. positions and offices in the state, between the dominant ethnic groups. The analysis will concern selected provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, which refer to the Greek and Turkish communities living in Cyprus and regulate the level and manner of their participation in exercising power in the state. The uniqueness of the constitutional solutions adopted in Cyprus will be emphasized, which, in order to ensure the unity of the state and constitute significant guarantees for ethnic groups, may in practice, however, turn out to be non- -functional or lead to distortions.
