The cycle of articles entitled ”Old Collections – New Architecture” focuses on contemporary extensions, conversions and modernisations of famous collectors’ museums that were established in the United States at the turn of the 20th century. This article presents the history of Isabella Stewart Gardner’s collection, for which she built a special, private museum on the outskirts of Boston, which was modelled on the Renaissance palaces of Venice. In 2005-2012 the New Wing was added, designed by the well-known Italian architect Renzo Piano. Although the project has been controversial from the very beginning, the final result has been received favourably, and is seen as a respectful complement to the historical Museum building, which may serve as an example for similar ventures.

On the 1st of. May 2015, in Meatpacking District of West Manhattan, the new building of the Whitney Museum of American Art was opened. It is the fourth location of this well-known New York museum, which was established in 1930, by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The Whitney possesses the world’s largest collection of American art and focuses on exhibiting living artists. Spectacular, industrial in character architecture signed by Renzo Piano has met with mixed reactions. The building is functional and well connected with the post-industrial site, however, not appreciated by everyone. Similar situation happened forty years ago, when Centre of Georges Pompidou, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, pioneers of high-tech architecture, was widely criticised. Only popularity, high attendance and commercial success of famous Paris facility changed that negative opinion. Is the New Whitney following the same path – time will tell.

Three museums of the art of the Pacific and the Far East are described in the paper: Singapore National Gallery, Australian Art Gallery of South Wales in Sydney, and New Zealand’s Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. The institutions have a lot in common: they are all housed in Neo-Classical buildings, raised in the colonial times, and have recently been extended, modernized, as well as adjusted to fulfill new tasks. Apart from displaying Western art, each of them focuses on promoting the art of the native peoples: the Malay, Aborigines, and the Maori. Having been created already in the colonial period as a branch of British culture, they have been transformed into open multicultural institutions which combine the main trends in international museology: infrastructure modernization, collection digitizing, putting up big temporary exhibitions, opening to young people and different social groups, featuring local phenomena, characteristic of the Pacific Region. The museums’ political and social functions cannot be overestimated; their ambition is to become culturally active institutions on a global scale, as well as tools serving to establish a new type of regional identity of postcolonial multicultural character.

SUSCH MUSEUM

Opened in January 2019, the Museum Susch crowned the collecting efforts of Grażyna Kulczyk, who, following her failed attempts at establishing a contemporary art Museum in Poznan and Warsaw, finally found home for her collection in a small Swiss village located between two Alps resorts: Sankt Moritz and Davos. The combination of both spectacular mountainous landscape and the edifices of an old convent into which the display has been built, as well as the purposefully created art pieces, contribute to creating a peculiar atmosphere of the place. Nature, architecture, and art have all merged into one total work here, namely into a contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk. Poland is echoed in the Museum: e.g. the genuine name of the institution: ‘Muzeum Susch’ is a combination of Polish and German words; furthermore, the pieces presented in the collection are to a great extent made up of works by contemporary Polish artists; wooden walls of the Museum Café are decorated with prints showing the Zakopane ‘Under Fir Trees’ (Pod Jedlami) Villa. The question whether Grażyna Kulczyk’s collection has found its final home here, or whether it is still possible for it to return to Poland, continues open. The collector herself does not provide an unambiguous answer to this.

In 2017–2021, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam raised Depot, its new storage facility. Located centrally, the Depot is surrounded by the park close to the main Museum building. A unique 40m-high ovoid bowl-like shape is covered with mirrors reflecting everything around, and the facility is to house the Museum’s entire collection (over 150,000 exhibits). Fully accessible to the public, the Deport features a rooftop city viewing platform and a restaurant. The costs and challenges implied by the construction of a storage facility located in the city centre, and in a park, substantially exceeded those of ordinary facilities of the kind in city outskirts. However, owing to its bold and fascinating design, the Depot can undeniably become one of Rotterdam’s architectural icons, turning into an unquestionable tourist attraction. At the same time, the Depot has provided the solution to the problem of the collection storage, previously amassed in underground rooms vulnerable to flooding due to the high water level. A skilful synthesis of the collection accessibility and modern storage functions, supported by an attractive location and an unusual architectural form make the Depot an extremely attractive solution for museum storage facilities.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is located off the tourist paths, on the outskirts of Europe, and far away from the centre of Lisbon, in the serenity of the Santa Gertrudes Park. Its austere concrete buildings hide treasures from the collection of an extraordinary man, a millionaire of Armenian origin, an oil magnate, and an art and garden lover. The article presents the collector, the history of his collection and the museum buildings which now form an original park and museum complex run by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In 2010, the complex was entered into the register of national monuments of Portugal, thus being the first masterpiece of the 20th-century architecture to feature in this register.

Z dala od utartych tras turystycznych, na uboczu Europy i na uboczu Lizbony, w zacisznym parku Santa Gertrudes mieści się Muzeum Kalusta Gulbenkiana. W surowych betonowych gmachach ukryte zostały skarby należące do kolekcji niezwykłego człowieka, ormiańskiego milionera, magnata naftowego, wielbiciela sztuki i miłośnika ogrodów.
