The book published by the Museum of Art in Lodz Continue Listening, Please is the result of a number of interviews with current and former staff, and also with artists affiliated to the Museum, conducted in the course of the ‘Tell the Museum’ Project implemented in 2018–2022. Their authors methodically applied oral history to investigate the Museum’s history, following which they commissioned a non-Museum affiliate to prepare texts on the grounds of the conversations. The selection of interviewees, encompassing curators, conservators, individuals responsible for education, or administrative staff allowed to describe the aspects of the operations of the Museum of Art, events, and individuals, previously only marginally present in the to-date publications on the Lodz institution. Not really being a monograph, the book signals motifs which could be tackled in the course of the preparation of the future history of the Museum of Art, going beyond the paradigm of the existing stories about the institution’s history, such as its functioning in the times of the political and economic crisis in the 1980s, the operations following the 1989 transformation, employee relations, or the organic, including the non-human dimension of a museum. It also poses questions about functioning of museums, their role and organization, currently and in the future.

The publication Museums, exhibits, museum professionals complements our knowledge of how museums functioned in the Communist period and their situation after 1989. The book includes discussions or memoirs by eleven people vital to Polish museology, who were connected with National Museums (in Cracow, Poznań and Wrocław), museum-residences (the Wawel Museum, the Royal Castle in Warsaw), specialised museums (the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk, the Museum of Literature in Warsaw, the Jagiellonian University Museum), ethnographic museums (in Cracow and Toruń) and the Tatra Museum, which is an example of an important regional museum in Poland. Among the people are Zofia Gołubiew, Mariusz Hermansdofer, Jerzy Litwin, Janusz Odrowąż-Pieniążek, Jan Ostrowski, Andrzej Rottermund and Stanisław Waltoś. The book presents the image of Polish museology in a scattershot but interesting way. It also mentions more detailed aspects, such as how particular museums were founded or developed in the Communist period, and the individual role of museum professionals in founding and developing the establishments they managed. However, the most attention is paid to issues regarding the state of museums after 1989. The most important of these include the contemporary functions and tasks of those establishments and the challenges they will face in the future, and the role of a musealium and its place in a contemporary museum. The observations regarding internal changes in museum institutions, in the “master-disciple” relation in the past and today, the appearance of new specialities, and the change of their status and role in institutions (for example, of people responsible for education) are also noteworthy. Another significant thread is the discussion on the definition of a “museum professional” and which museum employees may use this title.

W książce zamieszczono rozmowy lub relacje 11 osób istotnych dla polskiego muzealnictwa, związanych zarówno z Muzeami Narodowymi (Kraków, Poznań i Wrocław), muzeami-rezydencjami (Wawel, Zamek Królewski w Warszawie), muzeami specjalistycznymi (Narodowe Muzeum Morskie w Gdańsku, Muzeum Literatury w Warszawie, Muzeum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego), etnograficznymi (w Krakowie i Toruniu) oraz Muzeum Tatrzańskim, będącym przykładem ważnych w Polsce muzeów regionalnych. Są wśród nich m.in. Zofia Gołubiew, Mariusz Hermansdorfer, Jerzy Litwin, Janusz Odrowąż-Pieniążek, Jan Ostrowski, Andrzej Rottermund i Stanisław Waltoś. Książka przestawia wyrywkowo, ale w interesującym ujęciu obraz polskiego muzealnictwa. Są w niej poruszone także kwestie bardziej szczegółowe, jak tworzenie i rozwój poszczególnych typów muzeów w czasach PRL, czy indywidualna rola muzealników w tworzeniu i rozwoju kierowanych przez nich placówek. Największą uwagę przykuwają jednak kwestie dotyczące stanu muzeów po 1989 roku. Najważniejsze dotyczą obecnych funkcji i zadań tych instytucji i wyzwań stojących przed nimi w przyszłości oraz roli muzealium i jego miejsca we współczesnym muzeum. Istotną kwestią są też obserwacje dotyczące zmian wewnątrz instytucji muzealnych, w relacji „mistrz-uczeń” dawniej i obecnie, pojawianie się nowych specjalności lub zmiany ich statusu oraz rola w instytucjach (np. osób zajmujących się edukacją). Ważnym wątkiem jest również dyskusja na temat definicji „muzealnika” i tego, kto z pracowników muzeów może być określany tym mianem.
