Jednostką strategiczną, zarządzającą powstawaniem, rozwojem i strukturą sieci polskich muzeów państwowych w okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego, miała być Państwowa (Centralna) Rada Muzealna oraz wspierające ją jednostki terenowe. Prace nad ich powstaniem prowadzono w latach 20., a następnie 30. XX wieku. W obu przypadkach początkowo miały bardzo szeroki zakres działań, a efektem ich pracy w perspektywie półwiecza miała być nowoczesna, dobrze zorganizowana sieć muzeów zaspokajających potrzeby nie tylko oświatowe, ale i naukowe. Pomimo tych planów zakres zadań szybko uległ zmniejszeniu, a już w kolejnych latach rola rady i jej oddziałów ograniczała się do teoretycznych dyskusji lub opiniowania budowy nowych muzeów. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie okoliczności powołania oraz funkcjonowania rad muzealnych, a także realizowanych przez nie zadań. Został on oparty przede wszystkim na materiałach archiwalnych Ministerstwa Wyznań Religijnych i Oświecenia Publicznego, któremu podlegała Państwowa Rada Muzealna, oraz na publikacjach z tego okresu i późniejszych.

The State (Central) Museum Advisory Board and its supporting field units were to be the strategic unit managing the establishment, development and structure of the network of the Polish state-owned museums in the interwar period. The efforts to establish them were carried out in 1920s and then in 1930s. In both cases, they initially encompassed a very wide range of activities, and the result of their work, in the perspective of half a century, was to be a modern, well-organised network of museums satisfying not only educational, but also scientific needs. Despite these plans, the scope of tasks quickly diminished, and already in the following years the role of the board and its branches was limited to theoretical discussions or giving opinions on the construction of new museums. This article aims at the presentation of circumstances of establishment and operation of museum advisory boards as well as tasks performed by them. The paper is based first and foremost on the archival materials of the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education, to which the State Museum Advisory Board was reporting, as well as on publications from that period1 and later times.
