There are few linguistic studies about the register of the French language spoken during the First World War, on the front and behind it. There are many written testimonies, but not all have been analysed and therefore it is for the linguistic researchers to dig out into this vast corpus and present their conclusions. Even if since then the linguists have indicated that there is such an argot of the poilus, it’s of outmost importance, from a methodological perspective, to update the neologisms of the 1914–1918 War in order to determine if the French soldiers on the front did speak such an argot.

Peu d’études linguistiques sont consacrées au registre de langue française employé pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, ceci tant au front qu’à l’arrière. Les témoignages existants sous diverses formes écrites sont très nombreux, mais tous n’ont pas été exploités, tant s’en faut, et il incombe aux chercheurs linguistes d’exploiter ce vaste corpus en le soumettant à leurs analyses. Même si dès la période de la guerre des linguistes ont pris position quant à l’existence d’un argot des poilus, il est important d’un point de vue méthodologique de mettre au jour les néologismes de l’époque de la guerre 14–18, afin d’établir l’existence d’un tel argot utilisé par les soldats français au front.

In this paper, neology is considered in its relationship with translation. The purpose of this paper is to outline an appropriate methodology to manage the translation of neologisms and overcome the difficulty they present. The theme is illustrated by a concrete example (French/English) showing the relevance of document analysis to reach a satisfactory solution. The steps taken within the working method are focused on the use of new terms in context by specialists of the subject area, insofar as neologisms are integrated in language only when they are accepted by the community who is supposed to use them.

Artykuł dotyczy problemu neologii w odniesieniu do tłumaczeń. Celem analizy jest ukazanie metodologii tak, aby przełamać opór, jaki stawiają tłumaczeniom neologizmy. Szczegółowe omówienie konkretnego przykładu (francuski/angielski) ukazuje konieczność odwoływania się do poszukiwań odpowiednich dokumentów, aby znaleźć właściwe rozwiązanie. Tę metodę, która wskazuje na potrzebę uwzględniania użycia terminów, potwierdza fakt, że integrowanie neologizmów do słownictwa wymaga akceptacji tych, którzy mają ich używać.

Dans cet article, la néologie est considérée dans son rapport à la traduction. Le propos vise à mettre en évidence une méthodologie de nature à permettre de vaincre la résistance à la traduction qu’opposent les néologismes. À cet effet, le développement d’un exemple concret (français/anglais) montre le recours nécessaire à la recherche documentaire pour aboutir à une solution satisfaisante. Cette démarche, qui s’attache à s’en tenir à l’usage, se trouve confirmée par le fait que l’intégration de néologismes dans le vocabulaire est subordonnée à l’acceptation de ceux qui sont amenés à les utiliser.
