This article shows the principle of teaching the verb aspect in Polish by means of examples taken from other Slavonic languages. It presents the differences among verb aspects found in Polish, Czech, Slovak and Slovenian. The illustrative examples also document the final numer of mistakes made by foreign students whose first languages miss the right equivalent of the verb aspect. Special attention has been paid to the importance of teaching the verbal aspect in classes of language for specific purposes.

The article shows how the School of Polish for Foreigners at the University of Lodz teaches the Polish language for specific purposes. For the past 60 years, the School has been preparing foreigners and students of Polish descent to study at Polish universities. In this process, certain challenges arise, one of them being how to find correlations between the curricula for Polish as a foreign language and other subjects, which are introduced after the initial weeks of the Polish course, sometimes still during the introductory course. The students should be aware that the language they are taught is the same as the one they learn during biology, mathematics or history classes. The author, who has for many years been teaching Polish in medical groups, discusses the challenges that the teachers face. The correlation between subjects taught is illustrated by some examples from the School’s courses in Polish, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.

The notion of specialist language is described for the purposes of this article, followed by a short history of the teaching techniques used since the 1970s, where students have typically been taught general Polish as well asspecialist language. The materials and techniques used for the fields of business and economics are given as examples and described in detail.

Some of the solutions employed in the field of teaching languages for special purposes have turned out to be useful also in the field of general didactics, e.g. the task-oriented approach. What is particularly valuable in the legacy of teaching languages for special purposes is its eclectic nature, which gives one the possibility to choose and combine the best-tested methods depending on the individual characteristics of every learner. Such an undogmatic approach and search for the best possible technique, which takes into account individual characteristics of each student, appears to be a particularly valuable and enriching one in the days of certain reluctance towards an overtly rigidly defined concept of communicative approach in foreign language teaching.

Interaction between the learner and teacher in the context of Foreign Language for Specific Purposes (FLSP) is characteristic in that often the learner has greater specialist knowledge than the teacher for reasons of experience, or because they work professionally in the field. The purpose of this article is to define the factors impacting on this relationship and analyze possible difficulties for the teacher. The empirical part describes a pilot study with the aim of analyzing responses from eight FLSP teachers.

As Arnó-Macià (2012: 89) points out: “Within the integration of technology into language education, special attention needs to be paid to languages for specific purposes (LSP) (…)”. Although a broad range of technologies may support the process of language learning, this paper investigates those technologies which are connected with the computer and Internet use in order to learn a foreign language. A term used to refer to the above-mentioned issue is Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). The paper presents results of a pilot study conducted of students of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) using a questionnaire containing a CALL component. This data collection instrument was especially designed for the purpose of the research. The main aim of the present article is to consider how to measure participants’ competences, attitudes and skills in the area of ICT (Information and Communication Technology).
