Perspektywę teoretyczną dla podjętych tu rozważań i analiz daje humanistyczna teoria sztuk walki i antropologia sztuk walki. Celem pracy jest analiza przydatności form technicznych w nauczaniu sztuk walki. Postawiono problem: Czy formy (kata) są dzisiaj niezbędne, aby właściwie nauczać karate? Uwzględnione zostały wypowiedzi mistrzów, ekspertów praktyki karate, oraz literatura przedmiotu. Jest to więc szeroka analiza dyskursu oraz własna długoletnia obserwacja uczestnicząca autora (ponad 30-letnia). Zdaniem większości ekspertów formy techniczne są wciąż właściwą metodą nauczania sztuk walki. Z drugiej jednak strony ćwiczenie tylko kata utrudniałoby pełne opanowanie tej sztuki walki. Przedstawiono też analizę pięciu form stylu Idokan. Stosunek ćwiczących do walki, kata i treningu bywa różny. Podobnie zróżnicowane są opinie ekspertów na temat kata – ich sensu i aktualnej przydatności. Większość ekspertów i autorów prac z literatury przedmiotu uznaje nieprzemijającą wartość form technicznych, jako metody nauczania karate i innych sztuk walki.

A theoretical perspective for taken deliberations and analysis gives a humanistic theory of martial arts and martial arts anthropology. The aim of the study was to analyze the usefulness of technical forms for teaching martial arts. The problem is: Are forms (kata) required to properly teach karate today? Consideration will be given by expression of masters, experts of karate practice and literature. It is a broad analysis of the discourse and authors own long-term participant observation (over 30-year). Most experts agree that the technical forms are still the appropriate method of teaching martial arts. On the other hand kata exercise only hamper full mastery of the martial arts. An analysis of five forms karate Idokan style was presented, too. The ratio of trainees to fight, kata and training varies. Similarly diverse are the opinions of experts on the executioner – their meaning and current relevance. Most experts and authors of works of literature recognize the technical forms of permanent value, as a method of teaching karate and other martial arts.
