Profanacja czy innowacja? Dekonstrukcja stroju ludowego w konwencji folk fashion

In the fashion world of today there appears an increasing number of projects whose overall theme are traditional folk costumes. On the one hand, designers embark upon representing folk costumes faithfully, yet on the other, only some reverberations are present in the “folk fashion” current, whose framework encompasses aleatoric associations of native patterns that compose a peculiar type of axiological mosaic. The foregoing constitutes a stimulus for cultural-imbued creativity, while concurrently being an alternative for mass production. In many cases, attempts to resuscitate tradition translate into space for re-interpreting it, the ramification of which is, in turn, a challenging research area for contemporary ethnology and cultural anthropology.

Folklor muzyczny jest zjawiskiem z pogranicza etnologii i muzykologii. Z etnologicznego punktu widzenia zagadnienie to znacznie wykracza poza niematerialne aspekty kultury. Prezentacje zespołów regionalnych czerpiących z dorobku folkloru muzycznego wymagają stosownej oprawy tworzonej na bazie artefaktów materialnych. Na wizerunek zespołów wpływa niewątpliwie odpowiednio dobrany kostium sceniczny, niemal automatycznie utożsamiamy ze strojem ludowym, warto zatem spojrzeć na strój ludowy przez pryzmat jego scenicznych modyfikacji.

Musical folklore is a complex phenomenon on the border of ethnology and musicology. From an ethnological point of view, this issue goes far beyond the intangible aspects of culture itself. Presentations of regional folk music groups taking inspiration from the achievements of musical folklore reveal the appropriate artistic setting created on the basis of material artifacts. The image of these music groups is undoubtedly influenced by a properly selected stage costume, almost automatically identified with the folk costume, so it is worth looking at the folk costume through the prism of its stage modifications.

The article is the first attempt to familiarize with the possibilities of using the ethnogeographic method to present cultural diversification in a microscale (in the case of Cieszyn Silesia). Among other things in the text, the following are brought closer: the specificity of the ethnogeographic method, the current state of the Polish Ethnographic Atlas studies on traditional (also Christmas Eve) food, the specificity of the analysed source materials, and the general context of celebrating the Christmas Eve in Cieszyn Silesia. However, the research focus is on an attempt to show the cultural diversity of several villages in Cieszyn Silesia in the early 21st century on nine ethnographic maps, for the first time elaborated in a (regional) microscale. At the same time, the following questions are raised: 1) Do the Christmas Eve dishes served in the examined villages in the early 21st century preserve the cultural specificity of Cieszyn Silesia?; 2) Are the examined villages relatively culturally homogeneous or do they distinguish against the background of the others?; 3) Can the ethnogeographic method enable the presentation of cultural diversification in smaller territories?

Celem artykułu jest pierwsza próba przybliżenia możliwości wykorzystania metody etnogeograficznej do ukazywania zróżnicowania kulturowego w mikroskali (przykład Śląska Cieszyńskiego). W tekście przybliżono m.in. specyfikę metody etnogeograficznej, stan dotychczasowych badań Polskiego Atlasu Etnograficznego nad pożywieniem ludowym (w tym wigilijnym), ogólny kontekst świętowania wigilii Bożego Narodzenia na Śląsku Cieszyńskim. Szerzej skupiono się jednak na próbie przedstawienia zróżnicowania kulturowego kilkunastu wsi Śląska Cieszyńskiego na początku XXI w. na dziewięciu mapach etnogeograficznych, po raz pierwszy opracowanych w mikroskali (regionalnej). Autorka stawia jednocześnie następujące pytania: 1) Czy potrawy wigilijne podawane w badanych wsiach na początku XXI w. zachowują specyfikę kulturową Śląska Cieszyńskiego?; 2) Czy omawiane wsie są jednorodne pod względem kulturowym, czy może wyróżniają się na tle pozostałych?; 3) Czy za pomocą metody etnogeograficznej można ukazać zróżnicowanie kulturowe na mniej rozległych obszarach?

The Atlas of Cultural Heritage of the Polish Village (a Project)

The ethnographic atlases hitherto published in Europe have been created to meet the needs of particular countries and nations rather than with any prospect of comparative studies in mind. Thereby, it is difficult to find maps which are comparable when it comes to systematics and chronology. Therefore, we believe it necessary to interpret anew source materials deposited in Cieszyn workshop of the Polish Ethnographic Archives – to deepen the systematics of mapped phenomena along with their chronology and earmark for future development and studies topicsthat appear in other European atlases. The resultant maps are to compose an innovative edition, tentatively entitled The Atlas of Cultural Heritage of the Polish Village. The present article familiarizes readers with the concept of the planned endeavour, including aims, preliminary assumptions of the project, and the methodology of research.
