The author deals with the relatively little exam in ed history of the names of streets and squares in Warsaw, discussed upon the example Żoliborz Urzędniczy, and the last eighty years of its history as adistrict of the capital. The author is of the opinion that frequent and rash changes of the names of city streets and squares, which accompany successive political trans for mations, and are treated as an element of visual propaganda in urban space, are not only troublesome and costly for the residents and administration, but also harmful, since they in terrupt the continuum of tradition and contradict the principle of the protection and care of cultural legacy. Claiming that manipulation with a historical document (and traditional names, which are a part of the town history, can be regarded as such), is contrary to efforts to preserve non-material cultural property, the author postulates to include the problem of the names in a law about the protection of cultural property, particularly as regards areas subject to conservation protection.
