The issues of innovation and innovativeness frequently dominate contemporary public debate. It is argued that innovation is beneficial and coveted, and results in economic and social development. Such an approach, however, leads to an impoverished perception of innovation. The impact of innovation can be both positive and negative, and permeate the individual, organizational, and socio-economic level. Thus, the objective of this article is to identify and describe the social benefits and drawbacks involved in financial innovation. The considerations presented in this article include definitions of basic terms, i.e. innovation, innovativeness, and innovative organisation. Moreover, the paper discusses the relations between these concepts. The author works on the premise that the effects of innovation can be both positive and negative, which has been verified on the example of financial innovation and its social consequences. The article indicates that innovation may constitute the source of financial exclusion and financial inclusion alike.

Tematy innowacji i innowacyjności często dominują we współczesnej debacie publicznej. Wskazuje się, że innowacje są dobre i pożądane, a ich skutkiem jest rozwój gospodarczo-społeczny. Takie postrzeganie innowacji jest jednak zubażające, gdyż innowacje mogą mieć zarówno pozytywne, jak i negatywne skutki na poziomie indywidualnym, organizacyjnym oraz gospodarczo-społecznym. Celem artykułu jest więc poznanie i opisanie społecznych pozytywnych oraz negatywnych konsekwencji innowacji finansowych. W rozważaniach przedstawionych w artykule zdefiniowano podstawowe pojęcia – „innowacje”, „innowacyjność”, „innowacyjna organizacja” – i scharakteryzowano występujące między nimi relacje. Sformułowano ponadto założenie, że innowacje mają zarówno pozytywne, jak i negatywne skutki – co zostało zweryfikowane na przykładzie innowacji finansowych i ich społecznych konsekwencji – mogą być również źródłem wykluczenia i inkluzji finansowej.
