The article discusses the immigrant experience of America in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz and analyses it with the use of the neobaroque esthetics. The paper seeks to present neobaroque elements present in the text, such as hybridity and the tension between the center and the peripheries to show that neobaroque poetics can be successfully employed to talk about the experience of exile, the migrant condition and the search for identity.

“Neither Here Nor There.” The Experience of Borderless Nation in Contemporary Dominican-American LiteratureDiscussing migrant identities, critics very often focus on the state in-between, the state between the borders, or being neither here nor there, and a migrant group that seems to epitomize this in-between condition is the Dominican-Americans. Consequently, the article seeks to examine the experience of in-betweenness, of being suspended between the boundaries and borders of two countries in selected texts of contemporary Dominican-American writers: Junot Díaz’s novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and a short story “Monstro,” and Angie Cruz’s Soledad. It aims to analyze how the texts discuss the experience of in-betweenness through hybridity (for instance intertextuality and magical realism) with the use of tools offered by the neo-baroque esthetics. „Ani tu, ani tam”. Doświadczenie narodu bez granic we współczesnej literaturze dominikańsko-amerykańskiejAnaliza tożsamości imigrantów często skupia się na byciu pomiędzy, egzystowaniu między granicami, a także braku przynależności do żadnej z kultur. Grupa, która wydaje się uosabiać ten stan, to migranci z Republiki Dominikany w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje temat doświadczenia bycia pomiędzy, zawieszenia pomiędzy granicami i między dwoma krajami w wybranych tekstach współczesnych pisarzy dominikańsko-amerykańskich: powieści Krótki i niezwykły żywot Oscara Wao i opowiadania „Monstro” Junota Díaza oraz powieści Soledad Angie Cruz. Celem artykułu jest analiza doświadczenia bycia pomiędzy wyrażanego poprzez hybrydę, czemu służą narzędzia oferowane przez estetykę neobarokową, a także poprzez intertekstualność i realizm magiczny.

The article discusses Drew Daniel’s theory of the melancholy assemblage. By juxtaposing Daniel’s appropriation of Deleuze and Guattari’s ideas with Manuel De Landa’s discussion of the assemblage theory, it addresses the issue of space which, in spite of being one of the parameters of an assemblage, is absent from Daniel’s The Melancholy Assemblage. Therefore, the first question asked in the present article concerns the reason behind Daniel’s neglect of the spatial dimension of an assemblage. The second issue discussed in the article concerns the tension between forces of territorialization and deterritorialization in a melancholy assemblage. By approaching the issue from the vantage point of the neobaroque theory, the article argues that Daniel’s Renaissance melancholy assemblages already touch upon the problematic relation between performance and essence that would find its full manifestation during the Baroque.

Artykuł koncentruje się na teorii melancholijnego asamblażu autorstwa Drew Daniela. Zestawiając sposób, w jaki Daniel używa teorii Deleuze’a i Guattariego z jej odczytaniem przez Manuela De Landę, autor artykułu stawia pytanie o przyczyny zaniedbania przez Daniela przestrzennego aspektu asamblażu. Druga kwestia omawiana w artykule koncentruje się na napięciu pomiędzy siłami terytorializacji i deterytorializacji w melancholijnym asemblażu. Analizując zagadnienie przez pryzmat teorii neobaroku, autor stawia tezę, że renesansowy melancholijny asamblaż analizowany przez Daniela uwikłany jest w problematyczny związek pomiędzy reperzentacją a esencją, który stanie się jednym z głównych motywów Baroku.

The present article attempts to look at space from the vantage point of neobaroque theory. Its aim is to investigate how such Baroque strategies as framing and de-framing transform surface into space staged within the subject. It also analyzes how breaking the frame of representation may be seen as an ontological act dependent on the body and desire, the act allowing for the aestheticization of reality.

Celem artykułu jest spojrzenie na przestrzeń przez pryzmat teorii neobaroku. Artykuł próbuje pokazać, jak barokowe strategie obramowywania i przełamywania ram przekształcają płaszczyznę w przestrzeń usytuowaną wewnątrz podmiotu. Artykuł analizuje również sposób, w jaki przełamywanie ram reprezentacji może być postrzegane jako akt ontologiczny uzależniony od ciała i pożądania, akt, dzięki któremu możliwa staje się estetyzacja rzeczywistości.
