The subject of the paper is the ontological status of actual and non-actual worlds. According to one version of contemporary Meinongianism, while the actual world exists, merely possible and impossible worlds are nonexistent objects. Moreover, they do not have any other form of being. The aim of the paper is to indicate some problematic consequences of this kind of Meinongianism, and to sketch an alternative view, which is based on ontological pluralism—the view according to which there are many kinds of being.

The article outlines the main motivations for the Guise Theory and its intriguing theses concerning identity, predication, existence, and fiction. The second part of the article is devoted to an assessment of Castañeda’s theory. It discusses the most influential critiques of the Guise Theory, as well as Russell’s objection (important from a historical point of view) to theories of nonexistent objects. The last section of the article contains a comparison of the Guise Theory with the Meinong’s Theory of Objects, and points out that despite various similarities, we should draw a distinction between original and moderate versions of Meinong’s theory. The main motivation for this distinction are differences between accounts of predications, which allow us to call the Guise Theory “quasi-Meinongian” rather than just “Meinongian”. This is because one of its main claims is taken from the work of Meinong’s pupil Ernst Mally, and not from Meinong himself.
Artykuł omawia system logiki meinongowskiej T. Parsonsa zbudowany z myślą o analizach przedmiotów fikcyjnych. System Parsonsa był pierwszym systemem formalnym tego rodzaju i wytyczył kierunek badań formalnych nad problemami fikcji. Przedstawione zostają główne założenia filozoficzne logik meinogowskich m.in. teza intencjonalności Brentana, Annahmen Thesis Meinonga, prawo identyczności Leibniza-Meinoga i in.

This paper presents T. Parsons’ system of Meinongian logic, designed for the analysis of fictional objects. It was the first formal Meinongian system, and it directs formal inquiries concerning the problematic of fiction. The argument points out the main philosophical assumptions of Meinongian logics, including Brentano’s thesis of intentionality, Meinong’s Annahmen Thesis and Leibniz-Meinong’s law of identity. Subsequently, the syntax and semantics of Parsons’ system are presented. What follows is a critical analysis of the system, highlighting its most controversial point, the division of properties into nuclear and extranuclear. Status of fictional objects is also discussed. The conclusion is that the main advantage of Parsons’ system is its innovativeness.
