The world in which the heroes of Victor Pelevin’s novel live is a claustrophobic world. The author situates his characters in a destructive space. A Yellow Arrow, a train on the deck of which the action takes place, flashes without stopping at the destroyed bridge. It can be read either as a metaphor for human life marked by the absurdity of existence, or as a grotesque image of Russia’s transition. Turning to what is twisted, Pelevin states that the absurd can be overcome when one realises its existence and communicates with the world of absolute values.

The aim of this article is to give an anthropological description of verbal magic. The magical utterances are present in the following areas of traditional culture: folk medicine, family and annual rituals.  They  focus  on  a  formula  which,  in  the  opinion  of  people  expressing  them, have  some magical  powers  which  cause  positive  effects  in  the  real  world.  The  empirical material,  which constitutes  the  basis  for  the  description,  derives  from  the   questionnaire interviews  with inhabitants  of  the  rural  communities  of  Lublin  voivodeship.  The  author focuses on the elements that must be satisfied that the words gained causative power. These elements are situational context (which includes time and place of activity, sender, recipient, symbolic attributes), repeating, fidelity playback, optional confidentiality.

This study opens with a brief reflection on the typological value of the person and name of Josh- ua in the ancient Church. Christians saw the figure of Joshua as a foreshadowing of the saving work of Jesus Christ. According to patristic vision the order of grace in Jesus Saviour replaces the ancient order of the Law. On the basis of homonymy Joshua is associated with Christ. The intent of the study was also to present the historical beginning of the practice to invocate the Lord’s Name. To express the faith in Christ symbolically, the first Christians recurred to the use of numerology and to the nomina sacra. This article argues that the ancient Christian literature contains sustained and substantial references to the name of Jesus as ‘Saviour’. It is possible to find the theological finality in the interpretation of Lord’s name. At every point of the discussion in the Patristic tradition it is found a considerable richness and significance of the name of Jesus (biblical, doctrinal and spiritual).

Parents looking for a name to give their child reach for many different sources. For some it can be a family tradition recorded in their own memory or their relatives, for others it is the name fashions available on the internet, in the newspapers, or in the various mass media. Sometimes help is also sought from a numerologist, astrologer, fortune-teller or specialised internet applications.Other important sources for finding a name are also books and dictionaries, where more information on origins, history or even the features of the name’s character is given. There are individuals’ own sources and ideas as well.
