Hydrogen might be the fuel of the 21st century. Hydrogen should be perceived as an energy carrier and alternative fuel. The fuel can be used in many areas of the economy, including road and rail transport. The opportunities, possible benefits, and barriers that may occur in the development of the usage of hydrogen are pre-sented in this paper.

Wodór może być paliwem XXI wieku. Należy go traktować jako nośnik energii oraz paliwo alternatywne. Jako paliwo może znaleźć zastosowanie w wielu obszarach gospodarki. Jednym z nich jest transport drogowy i kolejowy. Możliwości oraz korzyści i bariery rozwoju wykorzystania wodoru zostały przedstawione w artykule.

Hydrogen is the simplest of elements and the most abundant in nature. It can be obtained from fossil fuels, biomass or by electrolysis of water. The production of hydrogen from renewable sources and its use in fuel cells gives hope for clean transport and independence from fuel exporters. Hydrogen fuel has the potential to revolutionize transport and maybe even energy security of the Polish state.

Wodór to najprostszy z pierwiastków a jednocześnie najobficiej występujący w przyrodzie. Można go otrzymać z paliw kopalnych, biomasy, bądź poprzez elektrolizę wody. Produkcja wodoru ze źródeł odnawialnych i użycie go w ogniwach paliwowych daje nadzieję na czysty transport i uniezależnienie się od eksporterów paliw. Paliwo wodorowe ma potencjał do zrewolucjonizowania transportu, a może nawet zapewnienia państwu bezpieczeństwa energetycznego.
