Media convergence and multimediality of message brought about a situation where journalists and editors of the content posted on the Internet are more and more frequently required to acquire the skills which have never been necessary for them before. It often forces them to become acquainted with professional software and information technology. On the other hand, availability of different databases and Internet applications provides journalists with possibilities of gathering, processing and visualization of data unheard of to date. The objective of the paper was a comparative analysis of selected Web applications generating interactive maps, data charts and diagrams, that may be useful in journalist’s everyday work, in the browser in an automatic way. The conducted research allows concluding that the tested applications may be applied in Internet, citizen or data journalism, that is wherever the concise and attractive form of data visualization is of primary importance.

Online journalism is characterised by specific features that distinguish it from its predecessors. It is not only interactivity, timeliness and new elements that make it unique. The way in which digital media are funded is also interesting. While in print media it is customary to pay directly for a copy of a newspaper, the situation is different in the online space. News content is usually freely accessible and online advertising in the form of banner ads or PR pieces is present. However, funding the medium can be unprofitable in this model, which is why some publishers have chosen to hide their web content behind a paywall. Recipients must thus pay for news directly again – in the form of subscriptions. The aim of the study is to shed light on the issue of online media financing in order to explore different monetisation strategies and their efficiency in the era of COVID-19.

Rozwój technologiczny mediów, a także kulturowe i cywilizacyjne zmiany w zjawiskach komunikacyjnych spowodowały zagęszczenie przestrzeni medialnej. Stwarza to nowe możliwości generowania przestrzeni komunikacyjnych w prawie wszystkich formach komunikacji społecznej.

The technology development of the media as well as the cultural and civilization changes in the communication phenomena caused thickening of the media space. It creates the new possibilities of generating the communication spaces in almost all forms of social communication. The phenomenon which contributes to the creation 56 ROCZNIK PRASOZNAWCZY. ROK VI of these processes is defined as the media convergence. The convergence in the context of the media culture is not only a technological process strengthening the transmission of the media or thickening the media space by the multimedia carriers of the content but it also has a non-technological dimension. The media convergence must be perceived as the one which gives a sense to the media culture. It blurs the line between different channels of the content flow, forms and formats in the media space. It also blurs the line between the segments of the media enterprises and between the production activities and the media consumption. The media convergence changed basically the media culture and it caused the changes in the way of using the media by the media audiences – from passive to active. The Internet era and the media convergence pose a danger to the loss of subjectivity by a human being.
