Yahweh's creative power, and the saving action which is closely linked with it, are among His most characteristic attributes. For Deutero-Isaiah, God manifests His creative power in history and in His saving action. "Old" things denote the history of salvation so far, while "new" things denote a new exodus from slavery. The theme of "old" and "new" things plays an especially important part in the following texts: Is. 41, 22-23; 42, 9; 43, 9. 18-19; 46, 9-10; 48, 3-6. In their exegetic analysis particular attention is paid to the motif of "old" and "new" things. The above texts show that history does not unfold in a random fashion, but is the realization of the prior word of Yahweh. God’s guidance lends things special unity. In this way He, "the first" and "the last" (Is. 41, 4), proclaims the beginning and the end, makes a promise and fulfils it, proving His godhead. He was conscious of His intentions from the beginning and was able to carry them out in full.

The article deals with the teaching about the poor in the Book of Amos. The first part is a detailed analysis of Am. 2, 6b-7a; 4, 1b; 5, 11a. 12b; 8, 4. 6, concentrating on the Hagiographer’s terminology. The second part comprises more general conclusions. Our study leads to the conclusion that terms saddîq, ʽebjôn/ ʽebjônîm, dal/dallîm, ʽănawîm, ʽanwê- ʼareṣ, which denote the poor, are synonyms. Hence, the title saddîq is to be referred to poor, the ignored, the oppressed rather than solely to the rich and prominent as has traditionally been done. Furthermore, Amos stresses the personal dignity of those generally held in contempt and belonging to the lowest social strata. In expressing these truths, the Book of Amos is independent of the teachings of the wisdom writers.

Only three Old Testament texts can be referred to Mary as the Mother of Jesus Christ: Gn. 3,15 in the fuller sense, Is. 7,14 and Mi. 5, 2 in the literal sense. Similarities and associations with persons, events and objects of worship appearing in the Old Testament are applied to the Virgin first of all in the Church’s liturgy.

The paper is an analysis of the oracle in Ezek 16, 60-61a; 37, 26; Is 55, 3; 61, 8. It allows to state that the prophets of the time of the Babylonian slavery basically took the concept „everlasting covenant” to mean a new covenant between God and Israel. As a result of this Jahve will for ever live among His people. The nation will be internally and spiritually transformed, so that they will never be unfaithful to their God.

The principles of probability theory were first discovered in the Middle Ages by the observation of dice games. According to the predominant view, in the Greco-Roman world probabilities were not calculated as such, but examples of a pragmatic awareness of the relative frequency of certain events have been identified. Until now, this view has been based on material drawn from ancient literary sources. Documentary sources, however, reveal a similar picture, and by using them we can gain insight into a much larger and more representative group of individuals, as well as into their problems and crises. The first part of this paper deals with the question whether there is in the so-called “Astragalkoine” a connection between canvassing a variety of prognoses and calculating probability by throwing knuckle-bones, i.e. were the most welcome answers connected with throws of high probability? The second part examines a number of documentary sources from different contexts (such as military supply, agriculture, and donations) which show that data were regularly collected over extended periods and were used as the basis for complex decision-making processes.
