In 2016, the Flemish Government adopted the transversal policy paper “Vision 2050, a long term strategy for Flanders”. It has set the ambition for Flanders for 2050 and has paved the way for a transition to a Circular Economy. It provided new objectives and confirmed the ambition to further reduce the total amount of (residual) waste by closing the loop and reducing the use of primary resources. More than before, prevention and reuse have been an integral part of materials management. The impact of waste behaviour needs to be measured against environmental and social priorities. In this context, the REPAiR project developed a multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary methodology. Building on this methodology, this paper explores how governance in Flanders and Ghent has been affected by this transition and draws lessons to address these challenges.

The article concerns that aspect of human existence that is frequently neglected both in everyday reflection and in social and humanistic research; namely, earth (soil). It attempts to make a synthetic reconstruction of the relations binding man with the soil preferred in western culture. Apart from identification of the predominant relations, which can be boiled down to it being treated as inanimate matter that is exploited, other concepts are also presented in which soil is perceived as the fundamental medium in sustaining life, change, and the transformation and reshaping of everything that exists. The article comprises three fragments, focusing on practices in cultivation, burial, and celebratory forms of contact with the soil.

The investments in biogas and bio-based fertilisers are an important tool for improving competitiveness and potential to increase production and economic performance of companies. The process of restructuring of the agricultural sector in Bulgaria, which is characterised by a large number of limited-capacity small farms, can be stimulated to diversify business by promoting development of biogas and bio-based fertilisers. This helps to increase the viability of the economy of rural Bulgaria which is currently heavily dependent on agriculture. The purpose of this article is to present and analyse the capabilities and attitudes of farmers to produce biogas and bio-based fertilisers as a precondition for improving competitiveness, achieving higher production and economic performance of farms in the agricultural sector and enhancing viability of rural areas in Bulgaria.
