Man is interested in his future no less than in his past. Evolution is not only a history, it is also an actuality. Of course, Homo sapiens evolves culturally more rapidly than it evolves biologically. Man must, however, face the problem of adapting his culture to his genes, as well as adapting his genes to his culture. Man is being forced by his culture to take the management and direction of his evolution in his own hands. This is perhaps the greatest challenge which mankind may ever have to face, and this is far too large a problem to be more than mentioned here. It is childish to think that it is solely a biological problem; the entire sum of human knowledge and of human wisdom will be needed. Biology is, however, involved, and this necessarily means both the Cartesian and the Darwinian, the molecular and the organismic biology. Fashions and fads come and go in science as they do in dress and in head gear. The big question remains: What is Man? It remains not because it is hopelessly insoluble, but because every generation must solve it in relation to the situation it faces. Biology is here relevant; a solution based only on biology may well be wrong, but, surely, no solution ignoring either the organismic or the molecular biology can be right and reasonable.

Człowiek interesuje się swoją przyszłością nie mniej niż przeszłością. Ewolucja to nie tylko kwestia historii, lecz także teraźniejszej rzeczywistości. Oczywiście kulturowa ewolucja Homo sapiens przebiega znacznie szybciej niż jego ewolucja biologiczna. Człowiek musi się zmierzyć z problemami przystosowania swojej kultury do swoich genów, a także przystosowania swoich genów do swojej kultury. Kultura zmusza człowieka do zarządzania i kierowania swoją ewolucją. Jest to być może największe wyzwanie, z jakim ludzkość musiała się kiedykolwiek zmierzyć, ale problem ten jest zbyt poważny, by można mu było poświęcić tutaj należytą uwagę. Przekonanie, że jest to wyłącznie problem biologiczny, byłoby przejawem infantylizmu. Do jego rozwiązania będzie potrzebna cała wiedza i mądrość, jaką do tej pory zgromadziliśmy. W tym przedsięwzięciu bierze udział również biologia, która siłą rzeczy obejmuje biologię kartezjańską i darwinowską, jak również biologię molekularną i organizmalną. Mody i nurty intelektualne w nauce pojawiają się i znikają niczym mody odzieżowe. Pozostaje jednak wielkie pytanie: kim jest człowiek? Jest ono aktualne nie dlatego, że w ogóle nie da się go rozstrzygnąć, lecz dlatego, że każde pokolenie musi na nie odpowiedzieć, uwzględniając sytuację, w jakiej się znajduje. Biologia ma tutaj niebagatelne znaczenie: każde rozwiązanie tego problemu oparte wyłącznie na biologii może być błędne, ale z pewnością żadne rozwiązanie ignorujące biologię organizmalną lub molekularną nie może być ani słuszne, ani sensowne.
