Karel (Charlemagne), Elegast, and Eggeric are the three main protagonists of the medieval Dutch epos Karel ende Elegast. Each of them is a knight, but represents different characteristics. The Monarch, the Outlaw, and the Traitor share some chivalric values but present contrasts in their behaviour. This article examines these three characters and their relationships to chivalry. It focuses on the image of chivalry in the epos, and not on the historical aspects of knighthood. As it is one of the first publications in Poland on Middle Dutch texts, it also outlines the chivalric literature in the medieval Low Countries.

‘Inolus, Inolus’ is one of the most mysterious text families in eighteenth-century Hungarian popular poetry. It emerges in both Latin and Hungarian manuscript versions, primarily in East Transylvania and later around Debrecen too. The secret hero of the prisoner’s song is a jailed robber who was sentenced to death. He mourns his own fate leaving a moral for those around him, or for posterity. According to some researchers, this song is about a Rumanian outlaw leader, Gligore Pintea. Others tried to identify vague Armenian references in the text. A reassuring solution has not yet been found. Another complex motif is the hidden treasure in the linden tree, about which the protagonist might have sent some encoded message in Latin from the prison. This topic is very popular in tales but not in linguistic context, so we are almost unable to decode it. It is a typical model-poem of our popular poetry and warns us against a too easy and quick interpretation; moreover, it gives us strength and patience to protect us from the danger of a ‘too clear-cut to be true’ final conclusion.

The article concerns a progenitor of the Karp family, Karp Jesypowicz, who after seizing the Bryansk Land by Moscow settled down in the Western border of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at the beginning of the 16th century. The author presents a genealogy and property study based on the stormy history of the Lithuanian-Moscow borderland in the first half of the 16th century. He mentions, among others, Karp’s participation in the battle of Orsha. Characterizing his subsequent marriages, the author describes Karp’s efforts to maintain and increase his assets. The author also writes about Karp’s career of a civil servant. The author depicts him as a man of social advancement who, being an exceptionally industrious and unconventional person, was also incredibly successful in the civil service sector becoming a Crown Judge. Apart from his numerous personal qualities, very good contacts with the Radziwiłł and Sapieha families abetted his success too. Karp Jesypowicz started a long-term and close relationship with the Radziwiłł house for his offspring whereas his social status contributed to the strengthened position of his descendants in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The article has been written with the use of a thorough query in foreign and Polish archives and on the basis of printed sources, most of all the books of the Lithuanian Metrica.
