Objectives: Normoglycemic Wistar rats’ Glycated Hemoglobin Levels (GHL) showed a time-dependent difference between control groups and those exposed to regular inhalation of peroxidizing extracts of turpentine. These extracts were able to optimize the oxygen permeation at the cellular level during and subsequently to a breathing session. The more the rats breathed turpentine peroxidized vapor, the lower their GHL was. This study was designed to confirm, in ex-vivo blood samples, the impact of peroxidizing extract on the GHL. Materials and Methods: Red blood cells were separated from plasmas by centrifugation. Plasmas were treated by peroxidizing and non-peroxidizing turpentine vapor or untreated (control), then combined with washed red blood cells three hours before evaluation. Glycation of hemoglobin proteins was quantified according to the Habeed’s method. Results: The ex-vivo experiments showed that the peroxidizing terpenes reduced the GHL after a three-hour contact. So did oxidized terpenes. Controls and the volatile component of the expended essential oil showed the opposite results. Conclusion: Optimal oxygenation, especially when facilitated by the peroxidized volatile component of the essential oil of turpentine, can protect organisms (mammals in this study) from protein glycation. Optimizing oxygenation can also reduce the GHL of treated blood samples after three hours of incubation.

Introduction. Our understanding of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is crucial for the applications of this treatment. In this physical phenomenon occurs light absorption by the applied photosensitizer, which results in its excitation to higher electron levels. After activation, a series of complex physicochemical processes take place in the tissues. Aim. The aim of this study was to describe the basic naturally occurring photosensitizers used in PDT techniques. This study clarified applications of photosensitizers. Material and methods. This study was used basic information about PDT reaction and the selective destruction of the tumor by photooxidation: a photosensitizer, a light source and oxygen. The papers reviewed here are based on Medline/Pub. Analysis of the literature. Photodynamic therapy is an innovative form of treatment. This method is not a commonly used therapeutic and therapeutic tool, but a supplement to many already tested and analyzed techniques. Thanks to continuous research, this method has a wider and wider range of applications in medicine. Conclusion. The data indicates increased number of papers regarding applications of PDT in medicine.

W artykule analizuję twierdzenie, że uporządkowanie przyrody jest wyjątkowo dostosowane do życia istniejącego na Ziemi (życia ziemskiego), a zwłaszcza do organizmów żywych podobnych do współczesnych ludzi. Dokonuję ponownej oceny tezy Hendersona z książki The Fitness of the Environment [Dostosowanie środowiska], zgodnie z którą zespół podstawowych substancji biochemicznych, które wchodzą w skład życia ziemskiego, cechuje się unikatowym synergicznym dostosowaniem do tworzenia złożonych układów chemicznych charakterystycznych dla życia.

Here I review the claim that the order of nature is uniquely suitable for life as it exists on earth (Terran life), and specifically for living beings similar to modern humans. I reassess Henderson’s claim from The Fitness of the Environment that the ensemble of core biochemicals that make up Terran life possess a unique synergistic fitness for the assembly of the complex chemical systems characteristic of life. I show that Henderson’s analysis is still remarkably consistent with the facts one century after it was written. It is still widely accepted even among researchers in astrobiology. I also review the evidence for believing that many of the properties of the same core set of biochemicals are specifically fit for the physiology of complex terrestrial beings resembling modern humans. I show that none of the recent advances in the field of extremophile biology, alternative biochemistries, or recent allusions to apparent defects in the fitness of nature for Terran life significantly undermine the core argument, that nature is peculiarly fit for carbon-based Terran life, and especially for the physiology of complex terrestrial beings resembling modern humans.
