Autor przedstawia podporządkowanie misji ad gentes w Afryce danemu Portugalii przywilejowi padroado. Ten przywilej stał się podstawą tzw. „misji patronackiej”, która położyła się cieniem na ewangelizacji Afryki, skutecznie ją blokując przez utożsamianie misji z interesami Imperium Portugalskiego. Do prowadzenia misji przez długi czas nie dopuszczano nie-Portugalczyków oraz misjonarzy posyłanych przez Kongregację Rozkrzewiania Wiary. Mimo to Kongregacja Rozkrzewiania Wiary rozwinęła system prefektur i wikariatów apostolskich, które były podporządkowane bezpośrednio papieżowi. Było to wykorzystanie luki prawnej, która z czasem stała się praktyką Kongregacji. Pewne zasady z systemu padroado paradoksalnie stosowano jeszcze w XX w.

The author presents the subordination of the mission ad gentes in Africa to the privilege of the padroado given to Portugal. This privilege became the basis of the so-called “patronage mission”. It cast a shadow on the evangelization of Africa effectively blocking it by identifying the mission with the interests of the Portuguese Empire. For a long time non-Portuguese and missionaries sent by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith were not allowed to carry out missions. Nevertheless, the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith developed a system of prefectures and apostolic vicariates that were subordinated directly to the pope. This was an exploitation of a legal loophole which over time became the practice of the Congregation. Paradoxically, some rules from the padroado system were still used in the 20th century.

W okresie kolonialnym papieże powierzyli kierowanie działalnością misyjną patronatowi królów Hiszpanii i Portugalii. Wraz z pojawieniem się Portugalczyków w Azji w 1468 r. rozpoczął się okres ewangelizacji tego regionu pod kontrolą władzy świeckiej, znany jako system padroado. Odpowiedzią na to była Instrukcja dla wikariuszy apostolskich, udających się do prowincji chińskich: Tonkinu i Kocinchiny Kongregacji de Propaganda Fide z 1656 r. Rozporządzenie Kongregacji zawiera trzy wielkie dyrektywy: konieczność formacji kleru rodzimego, oddzielenie działalności misyjnej od polityki oraz poszanowanie dla kultur lokalnych. Ważny rozdział stanowi tu traktat misjologiczny i apel Kongregacji o jedność Kościoła opartą na posłuszeństwie Stolicy Apostolskiej. Z dokumentu wynika głęboka świadomość powszechności chrześcijaństwa otwartego na wszystkie kultury, która w XX wieku znajdzie wyraz w teologii inkulturacji.

During the colonial period, the popes entrusted the management of missionary activities to the patronage of the kings of Spain and Portugal. With the arrival of the Portuguese in Asia in 1468 a period of evangelisation of the region under the control of secular authority began, known as the padroado system. The response to this was the ‘Instruction to the Apostolic Vicars going to the Chinese provinces of Tonkin and Kocinchina’ of the Congregation de Propaganda Fide in 1656. The Congregation’s decree contains three great directives: the need for the formation of native clergy, the separation of missionary activity from politics and respect for local cultures. The missiological treatise and the Congregation’s appeal for the unity of the Church based on obedience to the Holy See form an important chapter here. What emerges from the document is a profound awareness of the universality of Christianity open to all cultures, which – in the twentieth century – will find expression in a theology of inculturation.
