Support (= Light) Verbs

The paper proposes a formal definition of support verb as (roughly) a semantically empty verb serving as a syntactic “prop” to a predicative noun such that the phrase V(support)(N) + N is synonymous with the verb V0 derived form N: ‘V(support)(N) + N’ = ‘V0(N)’, as in ‘to give an order’ = ‘to order’ or ‘to receive an order’ = ‘to be ordered’. The following points are discussed: support verbs as collocates, representation of support verbs in terms of lexical functions, semantic and syntactic properties of support verbs, semantic additions to support verbs (in particular, causation and phasic meanings), realization verbs, and the role of support verbs in theoretical and applied linguistics.

In axiological discussions, attention is paid to the integral and internal relationship of the natural language with values and their ubiquity as permanent components of all speech. Attempts to build a language free of all values ended in failure. However, not everything in the language is axiologically characterized in the same way, and their discovery and proper reading depends on the communication skills of the participants of the discourse and requires the use of appropriate interpretation procedures. In the media, there are texts defining order and chaos, ally and enemy, good and evil, importance and nullity of the discussed problems, which organizes the entire ethical discourse within a given culture, not only media, but above all real. This reality and we together with it and our values are then transformed into a reality and we start to live not in the circle of real values, but in the circle of values created in the virtual space of the Internet by the texts circulating in it.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest ustalenie związku między sensem zawartym w wypowiedzi a jej formalnym ukształtowaniem. Autor sytuuje swe rozważania na gruncie badań komunikacji naturalnej. Pojęcie sensu jest tu utożsamiane z tym, co w gramatyce komunikacyjnej nazywa się konfiguracją kognitywną. Konfiguracja kognitywna wyrażana jest za pomocą tekstów, ale teksty tylko w sposób umowny wskazują na sens, jaki zamierza przekazać nadawca. Autor zwraca uwagę na mechanikę przejawiania się sensu w procesie parafrazowania wypowiedzi i jej konsekwencje dla praktyki przekładu tekstu na języki obce. Przywołuje pojęcie sensu dyskursywnego, zakładając, że każdy dyskurs posiada określone własne reguły samoorganizacji, bez uwzględnienia których komunikowanie się w jego obrębie byłoby niemożliwe.

The aim of the article is to define the relationship between the meaning included in an utterance and its formal shape. The author based his discussion on the study of natural communication. The notion of meaning is in the article associated with that which in communicational grammar is referred to as cognitive configuration. It is expressed through texts, but texts indicate the meaning a sender intends to send in only a conventional manner. The author stressed the mechanism of the emergence of meaning in the process of paraphrasing utterances and its consequences for the practice of translation. He included the notion of discoursive meaning assuming that every discourse has specific individual self-organisation rules without considering which communication within it would not be possible.
