Parish priest’s canonical duties pertaining to teaching, sanctifying and pastoral care are defined by public and subordinate law. A parish as a community of the faithful is a legal person with a parish priest as its head. He is the parish's own shepherd. He serves under the jurisdiction of the Diocesan Bishop. Diocesan Bishop freely nominates a priest to the vacant office of a parish priest. Parish priest’s canonical duties pertaining to teaching mainly include preaching the Word of God, those pertaining to sanctifying include conducting the Mass and giving out Sacraments, and those pertaining to pastoral care - leading the community of the faithful that he is responsible for, learning their needs and, if necessary, rebuking them. It is the parish priest in particular who is tasked with Christening, taking care of the Viaticum, sanctifying the sacred water, funerals and dispensations. Connected to the office of a parish priest are the following duties: representing the parish outside, duty of residence, applicatio pro populo, taking care of the parish office.

Obowiązki kanoniczne proboszcza w zakresie nauczania, uświęcania i pasterzowania określone są przez prawo powszechne i partykularne. Parafia jako wspólnota wiernych jest osobą prawną, na której czele stoi proboszcz. Jest on własnym pasterzem parafii. Swoją posługę wykonuje pod władzą biskupa diecezjalnego. Biskup diecezjalny swobodnie mianuje kapłana na wakujący urząd proboszcza. Kanoniczne obowiązki proboszcza w zakresie nauczania, to głównie głoszenie słowa Bożego, w zakresie uświęcania, to sprawowanie Mszy św. i szafowanie Sakramentów św., w zakresie pasterzowania, to kierowanie wspólnotą powierzonych sobie wiernych, poznawanie ich potrzeb, w wymaganych sytuacjach upomnienie. Szczególnie proboszczowi powierzone jest udzielanie chrztu, troska o wiatyk,  udzielanie chrztu, święcenie wody chrzcielnej, pogrzeby, dyspensy. Obowiązki związane z urzędem proboszcza to: reprezentowanie parafii na zewnątrz, obowiązek rezydencji, applicatio pro populo, prowadzenie kancelarii parafialnej.
