This paper argues that ‘heritage’ is not a ‘thing’, place or an intangible event, but rather it is a performance or cultural process concerned with negotiating, creating and recreating cultural memories, values and meanings. This process is obscured by the authorized heritage discourse (or AHD). The paper critically analyses the AHD and draws on three case studies from England to illustrate some of the cultural work the heritage performance undertakes.

In Kazanie o śmierci (A sermon about death), Polish writer and Jesuit preacher Piotr Skarga wrote: reward wrongs, write a last will. Hence, the authors of ars bene moriendi manuals from 16th and 17th centuries were of the opinion that the last will was an indispensable step on the road towards a good death. They argued that the last will enabled the testator to erase the committed wrongs, secure his family and leave his worldly affairs in good order.

The main aim of the article is to show the role of the most important strongholds of the early Piast’ monarchy in the process of creation of their patrimony. Special emphasis is put on the character of these strongholds within cult sphere and on the meaning of the ritual places.
