The article focuses on the research activity of Yuriy Petrovych Stupak, precisely on his contribution to the study of educational views of Kobzar. Among multidisciplinary and versatile works of Shevchenko it is necessary to single out those that most vividly represent his pedagogical views and have rich educational potential, aimed at fostering national dignity, respect for one’s homeland and its history and portray high moral character of the Ukrainian people. In his works Y.P. Stupak emphasizes a great informative and educational role of folklore, which was in the highlight of the Ukrainian artist. The analysis of pedagogical views of Kobzar is valuable to modern history of pedagogy. It allows to understand the regularities of traditional pedagogy, to comprehend the role played by T.G. Shevchenko in the formation of the Ukrainian national school. The purpose of the article is to make historical and pedagogical analysis of Y. P. Stupak’s works devoted to T.G. Shevchenko studies, to identify and determine their scientific and educational potential. The analysis of Y.P. Stupak pedagogical heritage has proved that he paid much attention to the problems of education by means of literature, identifying T.G. Shevchenko as a conductor of folk pedagogy. The writer did not leave pedagogical works, but his prose and poetry, diaries and epistolary were full of ideas, thoughts, pieces of advice on education and upbringing of Ukrainian youth. In the description of fund material of the State Archives of Sumy region (SASR) there is evidence of unflagging interest to the works of great Kobzar. Several of his articles are devoted to various issues of T.G. Shevchenko studies. Finally, these observations were embodied in the work that has generalized nature – «T.G. Shevchenko and folk pedagogy». Y. P. Stupak specifies his interpretation of the notion «folk education» and states that this notion along with the notions «folk music», «folk art», «folk medicine» has a right for scientific use. The scientist is attracted by Kobzar’s ideas to combine achievements of scientific and folk pedagogy, school education and folk system of education. The article provides the historical and pedagogical analysis of scientific studies of Sumy researcher, where he refers to T.G. Shevchenko poetry and prose and his «South-Russian Primer». It determines the interest of the Ukrainian classic to the issues of children’s education and upbringing. The article focuses on further use and meaningful extension of the notion «folk education» in pedagogical works of Y.P. Stupak. Attention is also drawn to the important role of folklore in educating youth.
