Dążeniem zrównoważonego rozwoju jest zapewnienie społeczeństwu długofalowej wizji rozwoju. Działania prowadzące do spełnienie bieżących potrzeb mogą mieć krótkoterminowy horyzont czasowy, mimo wszystko zawsze muszą uwzględniać przy tym perspektywę długoterminową. Zrównoważony rozwój jest myślą złożoną, obejmującą całościowe obszary działania człowieka aż po szczebel lokalny i dąży do podniesienia jakości życia zarówno obecnych, jak i przyszłych pokoleń. Aby zmienić sposób korzystania z energii, najskuteczniej byłoby zwiększać efektywność energetyczną i opłacalność jej różnych źródeł poprzez wysoką cenę energii z paliw kopalnianych. Jak już wspomniano, punktem wyjścia tego systemu jest podatek węglowy, nakładany na paliwa kopalniane w wysokości proporcjonalnej do powstających przy spalaniu paliwa emisji dwutlenku węgla. Podniosłoby to cenę energii z tego źródła, zachęcając do poprawy efektywności energetycznej i zastąpienia paliw kopalnianych alternatywnymi źródłami energii.

Measures to meet the current needs can have a short-term time horizon, after all, must always take into account that the long-term perspective. Sustainable development is a complex thought, covering comprehensive areas of human activity to the local level and strives to improve the quality of life for both current and future generations, To change the use of energy, the most effective would be to increase energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the various sources by the high price of energy from fossil fuels. As already mentioned, the starting point of this system is a carbon tax, levied on fossil fuels in proportion to the produced by combustion of fuel carbon dioxide emissions. Would raise the price of energy from this source, encouraging energy efficiency and replace fossil fuels with alternative energy sources.
